Lemaire back to Jersey?

Posted on June 9th, 2009 – 9:38 AM
By Michael Russo

The worst kept secret in hockey — or worst kept speculation in hockey — literally since last winter appears to be coming into fruition. According to CTV in Calgary, Brent Sutter will step down as the coach of the Devils today.

Sutter’s tenure there ended in devastating fashion. In Game 7 back in April, the Carolina Hurricanes went from being 1:20 away from their season ending to ending the season of the Devils with 32 seconds left.

I’d expect that Jacques Lemaire will at least get a phone call to see if he’s interested in returning to Jersey.

Lemaire, who has yet to sign on as a consultant in Tampa for some reason, made it crystal clear after he left Minnesota that he does want to coach again. But he also made it crystal clear that if he ever were to coach again, it has to be for a general manager he has a relationship with. And he said it has to be on the East coast.

Well, there aren’t a lot of options with so many limitations.

Lemaire coached the Devils from 1993-98, winning a Cup there in the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season. He and GM Lou Lamoriello still have great mutual respect for each other, proof by the hour they spent in the stands chatting each other up when the Wild was there in March.

Only time will tell, but this has been my gut feeling from the moment Lemaire said he wanted to coach again after the season finale in Columbus. Just to make clear, this is pure conjecture though.

You have to wonder if anyone would really go down that road with Lemaire at this point though. Considering that it was costing us top free agent signings due to his style, GMs have to be thinking about that.

More power to Jacque if he can land another head coaching job, although I find it interesting that he demands to coach an Eastern Conference team when his neutral zone trap will prove even more antiquated with eastern hockey than it did in Minnesota.

Give the cup to jersey. How about a Minnesota New Jersey Lord Stanley ? I do think he will coach New Jersey

Geno says:

Well, stranger things have happened, that’s for sure. As Russo reported, JL and LL have a long-standing relantionship and apparently are tight personally. It would be interesting to see how the move, if it actually happens that is, would be recieved by the players and fans in Jersey. It would be equally interesting to see how future free-agency signings would or wouldn’t be affected for the Devils. Either way, get ready for a lot of snoozy, 2-1 hockey games Devil’s fans. ZZZZZZZZZZZZ………..

From the last blog entry I agree with Stoned’s post and comments about OJ up in Calgary. He sure ended up being a total bust, especially in the playoffs. And IIRC, I believe he had something like 47 points in 52 games for PHX before getting traded. Not bad by any stretch, but not exactly “tearin’ it up” stuff either. Maybe he can follow Iron Mike to his next short-lived, “why did we hire this clown” coaching stop to see if he can bust there as well.

One good thing for Wild fans would come out of a JL hire in Jersey. If it happens we would only have to worry about Gabby potentially signing with 28 other teams instead of 29. I think we could safely rule out the Devils as one of his potential destinations then.

Hey, the old MKVN is back again!! I was getting a tad bit concerned as his posts were sort of starting to look half-a**ed normal the past few days.

What the h*ll is a “Minnesota New Jersey Lord Stanley”?

No, wait….. Forget I asked.

I keep thinking about what Ken Hitchcock said about Lemaire after the season finale, basically that if he ever got his hands on a team with some talent he’d win everything.

I think you can make the case that Jersey is that team.

Lemaire “costing” a team free agents with DR as GM is different from Lemaire “costing” a team free agents with Lou as GM.

Good point Nick. It will be interesting to see.

Nick in New York says:

I may be alone in this, but I often felt like the Wild - trap and all -would have been a top two or three team in the eastern conference the last couple seasons. Their record against the east this season (12-5-1) as an example.

Nick in New York says:

June 9th, 2009 at 11:12 am

Oh man, this is rich!

http://hockeybuzzhogwash.com/

Granted I’m sure Eklund feels there’s no such thing as bad press, but it’s great that someone finally quantified what most people think: that the guy is an unscrupulous rumor monger.

Stoned on the Breakaway says:

June 9th, 2009 at 11:17 am

At one point weren’t they 11-1 vs the east? Something ridiculous. JL played the way he did with the Wild because he had to in order to stay competitive. Give him a team with some scoring depth like the Devils and you will see more offense while they tend to their defensive responsibilities. Could be a winning combination.

Or maybe Parise and JL would get sideways and we could get the kid to come home.

AustinTXwildfan says:

June 9th, 2009 at 11:25 am

For every 1 rumor Eklund gets correct, he gets approximately 30 incorrect (457 wrong, 15 right for 3.1%)

That is hilarious. What a doosh.

Jordan says:

Thanks for the link Nick. Pretty funny. I mean, we all knew it was bad, but picking a team out of the hat bad? Wow.

sunshine says:

June 9th, 2009 at 11:31 am

Isn’t it the perception that the Devils is the most boring team in East because all they play is the trap? And, its been 14 years since Lemaire last coached there.

So, nothing really changes in New Jersey. Winning but boring hockey is probably better than fast paced losing hockey.

Lucky says:

June 9th, 2009 at 11:44 am

Sorry but I don’t see the point of suffering through 82 borefests a year to get trounced in the first round of the playoffs by more talented teams.

GreenStar says:

June 9th, 2009 at 11:47 am

It would be interesting to see how the move, if it actually happens that is, would be recieved by the players and fans in Jersey

what all 15 fans? The devils don’t necessarily draw all that well and they have a brand new building to boot.

i’m with nick. not sure i’d be quick to say it was JL and JL alone that was causing FA’s to not sign here.

Heatly would be a huge score for Fletcher, I would have to think.

sunshine says:

June 9th, 2009 at 12:12 pm

More talented teams — that was our problem. we weren’t a talented team. We have a handful of talented players but really can’t roll 3 lines that can score at any time. Other teams have 3-4 lines that can score and added depth in the minors to help.

That’s why Fletcher was brought in — to field a more talented team.

Lemaire wrung out all the talent that was in those players and the result was what it was.

Lucky says:

June 9th, 2009 at 12:21 pm

Agreed sunshine, Lemaire did the best he could with what we had. I don’t blame Lemaire for our problems but it was time for a change. Defensive hockey was just helping Risebrough keep a job he should have lost years ago and keeping us from drafting top end talent.

JMO - We are not even close to a team that can bid for Heatly. If that rumor is true then Ottawa is going to want the farm since Heatly is part of the big 3 and locked in to a long term contract. We need to be acquiring picks and prospects to rebuild our farm system not going to opposite direction. Look what the “win now” mentality did to Toronto.

Gunslinger says:

June 9th, 2009 at 12:22 pm

Heatly would be a big feather in Fletcher’s hat, but OTT holds all the cards here. They have a high quality player with a long term contract, who (reportedly) wants a trade [I personally do not believe 90% of the hockey information ESPN throwns on their website becuase they have no vested interest in the sport]. The Sens can pretty much name their price, and we do not have enough assets to be the top bidder. A Harding and Pouls package will not get us Heatley.

Gunslinger says:

Geno says:

June 9th, 2009 at 12:45 pm

While I am most definitely NOT a JL hater by any means, and I agree with Lucky that he did the best he could with what he was given here, I do feel that he and / or the system he played here had a part in why UFA’s chose not to sign here.

Yes, Smug & TooL, as well as the ownership and managment style / philosophy had a LOT to do with it, no question. But the style of play, or the perception of it, was also a part of the reason. That, coupled with the lack of depth and overall talent that a high-profile UFA would have to play with here did as well.

For the record, Brian Rolston loves JL. And the feeling was, and still is, mutual. Brian leaving the Wild last year had nothing to do with JL. He left because he wanted to sign with the Wings, and would have if they didn’t land Hossa. Hossa was the Wings first choice, Rolston was the backup plan. Wouldn’t it be nice to have those kind of options if you were Fletcher?

Goody says:

June 9th, 2009 at 1:24 pm

Anyone bother to look up Heatley’s cap number yet?

$7.5M hit. Owed $8M per through ‘11-’12 season then $6M for a year, then $5M for a year.

39G, 33A, 82 games = .87 points per game

Just for comparison, Gaborik:
13G, 10A, 17 games = 1.35 points per game

Russo's Evil Twin says:

June 9th, 2009 at 1:27 pm

As for Heatly, you sign a guy like that as a FA. It would be a huge mistake to go after Heatly and give up what little young talent (and first round picks) the Wild have. Fletcher will be looking to sign that type of FA in the future, but for now you are only going to see him trading low/mid level players and getting the same in return. I’m talking about the likes of PMB, Hards, Boogy, and Shep. What you get in return is probably much the same. Unless you have a guy like Garth Snows phone number. Then it’s like taking candy from a baby.

Gunslinger says:

June 9th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

Unless you have a guy like Garth Snows phone number.

Or Doug Risebrough’s.

Jonsey says:

June 9th, 2009 at 1:32 pm

Just to add to the cap hit stats, average games per season:

Gaborik: 62.75 games per season

Heatley: 72.4 games per season

And Heatley missing 51 games in the 03-04 season was due to the car crash. If you take that season out, he’s at 79.3 games per season.

Russo's Evil Twin says:

The Wild could do a sign & trade; Heatly for Gaborik. They could also trade Bouchard and Johnsson for the Heater too…if Ottawa would do that. I wouldn’t personally but one never knows.

The Devs can have JL. I’d rather have a chance at high-end free agents.

Peter Laviolette for Head Coach of the Wild!!

Lucky says:

Green,

We’re talking about an All-Star that has asked for a trade (or so the rumor goes) not some Parrish or Penner that a team really wants to dump. Ottawa will get quite a few offers.

Hockeydad says:

Hockeydad: because he’s grateful to the State of Hockey for giving him his first chance at the NHL? And because Minnesota is THE marquee destination for all hockey players, and he celebrates that and still feels some pangs of affection for it/us?

Like how Darth/Anakin wanted to look upon his son’s face with his own eyes one more time before he died?

ms.conduct says:

Because he’s dumber than a bag of hammers?

Not saying he is, but that would be a reason.

tyjohn47 says:

June 9th, 2009 at 2:16 pm

Because he probably won’t get an equal salary or # of years out on the open market. If the Wild inks him for $7 to $7.5 mil/year for 6-7 years and then moves him to Ottawa, it washes out for both teams. The cap is going down at some point…probably after the 09-10 season. When it does, there will not be the kind of $ available to sign UFAs that there has been. Gabby had better get it while the getting is good.

Six Goalie System says:

June 9th, 2009 at 2:19 pm

I want to call for a ban on sign and trade deal discussions unless someone can actually give an example of one in recent NHL history. This is not basketball!

Jordan says:

June 9th, 2009 at 2:21 pm

I can’t imagine that there are that many teams who can even consider Heatly. If he wants to go West, I can only think of a handful of teams that could do it, and most of those teams probably won’t give the Sens a stud for him. He has a NTC or NMC or whatever too, so he could be doubly prickish and say he doesn’t want to go to PHX for example.

I think we’re in the running. I would like to see him play with Butch. Not betting on it though.

Nick in New York says:

As a matter of fact, “blogs” were called “journals” or, sometimes, “diaries” back then and you didn’t have to have access to electricity in order to read them. Just a trusting friend.

Did we ever determine if he will qualify for an incentive-based deal even though he’s not a rookie or 35-years old or whatever?

Re: JL. It has been too easy for folks to always tag him with the off side trap he invented. Truth is, he always had that in his bag but adapted to the players he had.
For some time we played as a very fast team with some talent. DR went for talented players. Then the Anaheim series, DR, TT etc decided we needed to be bigger and tougher. If you look, it was after those decisions that the draft choices disappeared in bad trades, that draft picks had not much to do with scoring or talent and the talent level on the team went down. We never became Philadelphia and certainly not the Wings. But JL did more than anyone could with the disappearing talent he had. If MG had played half a year I expect ownership would have had different feelings.

SotB & Pewterschmidt: awesome. The blog writer had short video clips posted with his hockey blog. OOOOH. He owns the deluxe edition of the movie. What a guy!

well ottawa needs a goalie, and he have a really good backup/young goalie….there is the main piece.

ottawa also needs some defensive help….we have kimmy or zidlicky readily available…trade them both…then they have about 7-8 mil in expiring contracts that turn into cap space(wont happen but a guy can dream)….I’m also pretty sure houston has a solid d-prospect we can part with (any one but cuma)…if they want another prospect instead….shep is expendable…certainly fletch would have to make another trade if that were the case.

next years draft is supposedly bad, so we can offer one from there (conditional on west finals…maybe)

I know Fletch likes his picks, and who doesn’t, but to get a really good forward in his prime…..that would be awesome…..

butch/Koivu/Heatly
Brunette/Koivu/Mittens
Nolan/Belanger/(insert solid f/a winger)
Fritzy/Shepard/Clutterbuck

the free agent has to have some speed, but it would be nice to have some power as well…..the team listed has some toughness issues (except for nolan and clutter)….i’d still love gionta…

What the h*ll is a “Minnesota New Jersey Lord Stanley”?

You see, some teams DO IN FACT play past April. In fact, some really good teams not only play in May, but also into early to mid June…like right now.

—cooke is playing smart hockey—

CookeSux. I suppose you could call getting away with almost taking Datsyuk’s head off with an elbow smart.

Pierre Maguire If I hear him say Datsuk one more time, I’m going to urk. I had to mute half into the third.

Hossa Way to bring it in the finals stud. Must be a Slovak thing. Put ‘em with Gaby and Demitra and you might come up with half a heart.

Hockey can be over now. I’d hang around a few minutes to watch the Wings skate the SC, but if its the Pens and I’ll admit they would have earned it, the tube goes blank at the horn.

Happy Birthday G Bettman. He got his wish. Game 7. Too bad everybody is on summer vacation at the beach.

I am not impressed with Leopolds lack of respect for DR and JL. You made a change that was neccessary, great ! You did not back DR and I am sure he seen the writing on the wall and that effected his job performance

Mister Leopold I am sure DR worked his butt off and he did a good job. Respecting him is the right thing to do

Leipold: Obviously, it has been an interesting year, and it has been a lot of fun. Still, not making the playoffs is not acceptable. It’s not acceptable from a fan standpoint. We have too good a team. Once you’re in the playoffs, anything can happen.

Next year, that’s really our hope. In terms of how much more fun can it be, it can be a lot more fun. The kind of general manager that we have now, with Chuck, I think he’s going to go out and get the same kind of coach — one who believes in up-tempo, who has the kind of belief that we have, and you build the team around that.

[…] Jacques Lemaire could return to coach the Devils. Former Devil player, current assistant coach John MacLean is also in the coaching mix, which is kind of funny since MacLean didn’t get along with Lemaire when he played for him. A system-oriented coach like Lemaire would be a step back for a Devils team that often thrived under Sutter’s uptempo, aggressive system. I hate to see the Devils walk away from a coaching direction that seemed to be paying off. […]

I had to sign on RE Devils’ coaching carousel redux: Laconic Lemaire joins mercurial Lamoriello with all the clamor of lilting l’s languishing on the lips of fans breathlessly longing for memories of past-wedded lives and the SC! While JL could win it again, it’s hard for me to see how JL would improve the GF and GAA under Suter the last two years. Also, will John MacLean ever get his coaching chance with NJ, a guy who won the cup in ’95 with JL and then another there in ’03? Probably not. I like the sound of Laviolette and Lamoriello even better. Don’t you?

isn’t the digital cutover on friday? the league will miss out on all those “challenged” TV users who can’t figure the conversion out.

I wonder what G Bettman’s strategy is for that demographic.

Mister Know it all says:

June 10th, 2009 at 8:04 am

KJ you raise a good point about Gaby and Hossa. Ironically both are available in free agency. For Detroit and Pitt they have stars already, but the Wild dont, so what do you do ?

Nick in New York says:

June 10th, 2009 at 8:05 am

Agreed with everyone who thought that was a great hockey game last night. Scintillanting back and forth, tons of skating, great goaltending…man would that game have been different if one of the teams had been this year’s Wild.

Wild Road Tripper says:

June 10th, 2009 at 8:11 am

G*: The digital cutover is at 11:59 PM Friday night, so yes, if the game goes to 3 OT’s (or something like that) I suppose some will be so-o-o brain-dead as to forget that the change is coming. Of course, most hockey fans are already on satellite or cable, both of which are unaffected by the signal change.

Maybe Bettman will sponsor a ‘digitally challenged’ night where those not smart enough to have done it themselves will have the materials given to them…

Anyone willing to bet on the Slovakian Olympic hockey team in Vancouver next winter? (Yeah, right.)

Wild Road Tripper says:

June 10th, 2009 at 8:16 am

NiNY: That game would have never happened if one of the teams had been this year’s Wild.

And, JMO, I don’t think we’ve seen the best of the Red Wings yet. They can still play better (the Pens played better than I have seen, BTW).

Game 7 Friday night should be something to see…

Question for everyone posting here. How do you guys get so, “hockey smart”? I thought i knew about hockey, but some of you are way over my head. Please throw me a bone here. I love the wild and hockey and want to be more involved. Where are you getting your information? Any great books I could read. What hockey websites should I be reading? Any help would be appreciated.

Entertaining game last night… not only for the game itself but for the fact that two jock loving dumbasses decided to get into a shouting match in the middle of the bar. It was pretty hilarious. The Pens fan was being loud and obnoxious and the Wings fan tried to ‘put him in his place’. I said to stop the talking and throw a punch… couple of pansies call themselves hockey fans… pshaw.
