Gushing about covering the Draft; Wild’s Summer Bash Thursday night; Draft Party at Tom Reid’s (not his house, his pub) Friday night; Russo Live Chat on Friday
Posted on June 24th, 2009 – 10:50 AMBy Michael Russo
Bonjour from one of my favorite places, Montreal, where I’m readying to cover my 12th NHL Draft (Buffalo, Boston, Calgary, Florida, Toronto, Nashville, Carolina, Ottawa, Vancouver, Columbus, Ottawa and Montreal).
Twelve.
By far my favorite league event to cover. That’s because every single person in hockey shows up at the Draft, so as a beat writer, there’s no better place to be. It’s the one pro Draft where you basically have to be there to cover it because all 30 teams’ Draft tables are on an arena floor.
And usually, the teams I cover swing big deals at the Draft. The Wild’s traded for Pavol Demitra and Todd White at the Draft, and set up the Manny Fernandez and Marek Zidlicky deals.
And the Panthers, to quote Jacques Lemaire, “Oh … My … Lord.” They were busy bees at every Draft, especially Bryan Murray, who acquired Trevor Kidd at the Boston Draft in ‘99 and Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha at the 2000 Draft.
The Panthers, with Chuck Fletcher playing a big part, acquired Val Bure and Jason Wiemer for Rob Niedermayer at the ‘01 Draft. Rick Dudley traded the first overall picks at consecutive drafts. The Panthers tried to take Alex Ovechkin at the ‘03 Draft — one year before he was eligible. They also, after I was covering the Wild, traded Roberto Luongo and Lukas Krajicek for Todd Bertuzzi and Bryan Allen at the Vancouver Draft and acquired Tomas Vokoun the next year.
Fletcher hopes to make some similar noise as the Wild’s GM, and we will see. He did learn from the one of the best, eh, blockbusterers in NHL history in Bryan Murray, and whatyaknow, BM the GM is about to execute yet another with some team with Dany Heatley.
As I’ve written, Fletcher doesn’t have a ton of assets he can deal, so there’s got to be the right fits and, as he said during last night’s interview, “the reality is there aren’t fits with most teams most of the time.”
Wanted to jump on and give you info on three events:
1) The Wild will have its Summer Bash on Thursday night at Rice Park in St. Paul from 6-9 p.m. Hockey-themed stuff, food and lots of autographs as the Wild broadcasters will be there, along with Nordy, Brad “Bomber” Bombardir and current players Derek Boogaard, Cal Clutterbuck, Colton Gillies, John Scott and James Sheppard — barring getting traded, of course
2) Tom Reid’s Hockey Pub in St. Paul will be hosting a Draft party Friday night starting at 5:30 p.m. The VERSUS telecast starts at 6 p.m. and Reid will have lots of information on all the draft-eligible players, as well as food and drink specials. And bring your laptops so you can still pay close attention to startribune.com/wild and startribune.com/russo, which will have live up to date information as it happens from the draft floor.
3) I’ll be hosting a live online chat on startribune.com Friday at 10 a.m., so be there or be square.
OK, I’m going to go stalk NHL execs, including ”Chucky,” outside the Board of Governors Meeting now.
Talk to you later, I am sure.

4) The debut of 100 watt jones at Minnesota Music Cafe on Friday night (after the draft).
Pimp it, kj!
Good stuff, Russo. Now would be a great time to take up tweeting something other than blog posts, BTW. Seems like the perfect medium for conveying the nuggets of info you get lurking behind the potted plants there in MTL.
Russo,
Going to say who you predict the Wild are taking in the first round?
MsC,
RE: Last thread
I am completely with you. This is one trade I hope we are not involved with. Too expensive.
Doing the bring the post over from the last thread thing:
- Aren’t Heatley’s and Gho$t’s cap numbers a wash?
With the new Backs contact kicking in next year, he kind of replaced Gaby - 6.3 to 6.0 million
- Call me a Kool Aid drinking saner version of MKIA but if the Wild keeps Gaby or gets Heatly or another high end goal scorer I don’t see this as a re-tooling effort even with the change in systems. Not saying the team would challenge for home ice next year but they should be in the playoff hunt. Hell, everyone but the Islanders usually are
- With the Gho$t prophecy ever closer to becoming true, I am becoming more pro Heatly. At first I was mostly against it - the buzz that the price might be on the low side helps.
Regarding the Summer Bash: it’s strange to think that John Scott might be the only one of those players wearing a Wild jersey next Fall.
Re: Otto - from the last thread.
The tank may have won a Cup, but one player does not a cup make. We are a young team. I don’t want to dump our young talent to bring in “proven veterans”. Don’t get me wrong. If the deal was right, I would be okay with it. But I would prefer if Clutter stays. Mostly because I think we will regret it if we let him go.
Atta Boy! Go get em Russo!
FFS, I have a question for ya.
How exactly do you bring over a post from a previous thread to the current one? I’m not very “computer-savvy” and can’t seem to figure it out.
Another 15 minutes of typing and proofing wasted at the bottom with “food”. ARGH!!
Geno, just highlight your old post then hit “CTRL” + “C” to copy the post. Then navigate over to the new thread, and make sure your cursor is in the Comments box… then hit “CTRL” + “V” to paste it into the box. Easy as 1,2,3.
AustinTX: I think we’re in agreement that Cal is a talented young forechecker. He had an exciting season this year and caught a lot of people’s attention. Which is why I think his trade value will never be higher than it is right now. If trading him means we bring in a 20+ goal scorer, I hope they trade him. But if I see him doing his Kamikaze routine for the Wild next season, that will be fun to watch too.
Deep Breath,
How long have you been lurking in the shadows?
I thought you signed off for the summer.
However, you also have to re-type any tags or emoticons.
Otto, that I can agree with. His value may not get any higher. But then again, if he continues to develop and becomes a 20 goal scorer, his value could be higher. But who knows how it will play out. I just know I like the guy, he has a nice upside, and he is fun to watch. I want him around.
To Mister,
You keep repeating that Fletch should sit back for a year. Really? Come on now. You don’t change the whole regime just to bask in the ungloriness (made that word up) of the past regime for a year. Nope. You come in and get the job done starting day one, not day one of year two.
Second, if this Gabby rumor is true, that makes it that much easier for me to boo him when he plays us. I haven’t liked the guy for quite some time, but I was going to keep an indifferent stance at games (i.e., no booing unless he scored, etc.) but not anymore. Straight up boo birds from this guy’s mouth.
Thanks guys, I’ll give it a shot.
In my opinion, if Clutterbuck keeps playing his annoying but disciplined style, he already is worth a 20+ goal scorer to the Wild.
He takes opposing players off their game, draws penalties, and can pot a few goals himself.
I don’t think we’ve seen his full offensive potential yet either.
He is an ideal piece to a Cup winning team, in my opinion. I wouldn’t trade him unless it’s part of a bigger package to acquire a first rate player that makes sense.
Like this Geno:
Geno per last thread:
SotB @ 11:28… I’m with ya on the Smug thing. I too doubt that Toronto listened to him much at all.
On the Modano / Dallas thing… Please, can we give that up. He may still be a serviceable player for another year or two, but is that really where we want to go? NO!!! And the whole “North Stars / MN connection / finish his career here” thing is getting old too. That money would be much better spent on other players.
Dallas is however another one of the teams that could be in for some rocky times ahead. Tom Hicks, the owner of both the Stars and the Texas Rangers baseball team is in deep, deep financial doo-doo these days and is already looking to dump controlling interest in the Rangers because of it. Couple that with a new GM barely removed from the ice with no front-office experience, and well….
Then look at situations in Tampa Bay (ownership issues and squabbles / team disarray), Florida (GM & coach), EDM (Quinn as new coach), CGY (salary cap issues up the arse), Colorado (GM & coach fiascos)…. Hey, it ain’t such a bad time to be a MN WIld fan right now. Out of all these teams, I honestly feel like we came out smelling like the perverbial rose so far this offseason.
On the Gabby thing…. How’s this for a scenario that would make Alan jump off his firehydrant:
1) Gabby signs with VAN. Then in training camp or soon after blows out the groin again and misses much of the season.
2) The Pavmeister gets bumped into by the towel boy at practice, or any player on the ice half his size during a game for that matter, and immediately misses his customary 20 games because of it. This, of course, occurs at least once more during the season.
3) The Canuckleheads are found guilty of tampering and must ante-up $1 million in fines and hand over a 1st round pick to the Wild.
Sweeeeeeeet………
oh oh. I was just trying to help. Now it may the most posted post in Russoville history.
sorry
Josh, you are on point. I agree 100%.
Quick question…If Gaby is enticed by being able to talk to 29 other teams, then why would he buy a house in VAN and come to an agreement with them before July 1?
From the bowels of the previous thread, with one additon…

Add on: I’m not on-board for a possible trade for Heatley. If ya believe what is being talked about on places like NHL XM and such, this kid is a great talent, but a real problem child. Sort of a team “cancer”, for lack of a better term. We had one of those already with Pav, we don’t need another. Plus, the price tag and the cap hit are just too much right now with the shape the Wild are currently in.
That is the $100,000 question Greg - I guess the Olympics - playing or watching if hurt
- is a nice out of the tampering issue. He could also say he is going to spend more of the off season in North America - we can always hire Alan to stalk him to see if that turns out to be true ![]()
I think we did it Stoned.
The “most-posted” post in the history of Russoville.
I’ve always said though, if ya read my stuff several times, I may, notice I said…MAY, start to make at least some small amount of sense. Works for me anyway. ![]()
Geno, it would be better if Alan bumped into Pav at the dog park and knocked him out for 20 games.
Agree on Heatley, and I believe he has bad karma going too, like Bertuzzi.
Josh, I’m basically saying the same thing as what you wrote: “I wouldn’t trade him unless it’s part of a bigger package to acquire a first rate player that makes sense.” I just think it’s a good possibility that this is how Fletcher will use C-buck’s market value in the next few weeks, as part of a big trade…. As for the Gabby house thing, if I had his bank account I’d buy a summer home in BC too. Great town, lots of scenery… might be all there is to this whole thing.
El Gato…
LOL!! I like that one!! ![]()
Not lurking in the shadows, just finding out that “AAA” hockey for a 9-yr-old is more time consuming than I or Mrs. Deep Breath could have imagined. Anyway, just waiting for the major announcements to start coming down the pike regarding our favorite NHL team (no, not the Pens KiPA). Have to see what kind of roster we have come October 3. Should be a great couple of weeks with all the speculation. Just happy that Ballgame is no longer in charge of the Wild’s speculation. Last thing we need is more expectation managing.
Hey Geno. Mission accomplished! We may be lost but we’re making good time.
Regarding Dany Heatley, from nytimes.com:
“The lasting image from Dan Snyder’s death, in this town and across hockey’s sprawling landscape, is painted in forgiveness. Moments after her son died, LuAnn Snyder entered Heatley’s hospital room. He would recover from the broken jaw and the torn-apart knee, but perhaps never from the survivor guilt. She squelched his apologies by saying that he would always be forgiven.
At the funeral, the Snyders hugged Heatley, then 22. Graham Snyder stoically announced that the family did not blame him. One life lost was more than too much, and Heatley needed support, he said.”
Sparky, Couldn’t agree more about the forgiveness/support thing.
I’m sure all the L.A. fans are overflowing with that kind of thing. Hope it all works out for them……
So is Harding gone on Friday? Any idea’s on a potential trade involving Harding? WHo do you think we take at #12?

I feel your pain, although my son is eight.
Derek, the draft pick topic has been around and around but “experts” say it could be any one of these guys:
Jordan Schroeder
Scott Glennie
Carter Ashton
There have been a few other names thrown around too. I think I like that Carter Ashton kid.
Are there any new rumors involving the Wild?
Also, whatever happened to Jason Weimer, aka the king of the middleweights?
Austin,
I like Ashton alot but think we should try to trade down to get him. #12 seems pretty high.
I would love to get Glennie at #12 or trade down for Ashton. JMO
However if Kuilkov(SP?) is somehow still on the board then snatch him up!
Stoned:
To quote Herman Munster…”I don’t know what I’m doin’, but I’m sure havin’ fun”. ![]()
Geno. With regards to modano it would be good business for the wild. Your going to lose gaborik so you have to have a plan on how you intend to replace him . Any moron even the texas guy could figure out that it would be better to go to the old guys instead of giving up players for players… just replace gaby and your fine
What about jagr is he ready to come back
You take care of this years roster first and then worry about future draft pick. This team is close
So when Gaborik’s rights are traded, we will know that he turned down Fletcher’s offer. But, will we know beforehand? I am assuming that Friday is the deadline for Gaborik to either say yes or no, right?
Any moron even the texas guy could figure out that it would be better to go to the old guys instead of giving up players for players… just replace gaby and your fine
You can eat Sh!t MKiA. You and your multiple personalities need to take a walk. You are lucky this is the internet. A remark like that deserves a beatdown.
Uh-oh, MKIA is messin’ with Texas…
Oh and by the way, I don’t think I can recall a single moment where I have agreed with you on anything. The only people who go along with your plans are the folks that live in your head.
Ok I just checked my email and jay ferguson was asking me how old jagr was… 37 is the answer younger then nolan
Hmmm let’s see you want to play up tempo hockey without gaby… you need to do something. Player for player stuff don’t sound logical unless you can leverage a team with cap problems
What isn’t logical is your usage of the English Language… or lack thereof.
Austin split personality is a disease. You should not make fun of that. The aeros suck by the way. Nice playoff crowd figures what was it 2000 a game. They should move that team to carrol iowa
IF the Gabby house thing is legitimate:
A - It’s got to really hurt Fletch’s ability to trade his rights…if Marian has made up his mind, no one is going to give us a draft pick for any rights…unless…
B - The NHL slams Vancouver with the tampering thing…With two different sets of circumstances, and an actual home purchase prior to free agency, you’d think this would be a pretty clear case.
That doesn’t even make sense. Since when have I ever said I was an Aeros fan? Just because I live in TX means that’s the team I like? I am a Wild fan homie. Stop being such a douchbag and go back to debating with yourself on how to get more MN born players on the Wild; and make sure you wash your sheets when you wake up from that Modano dream you have been having the last few months.
Noooooooooooooo!!!!!!!! They cannot trade Clutterbuck. He is the closest thing we have to Cam Neely (as much as a stretch that may be). And a Cam Neely type is what you want on the forecheck in a offensive system.
Hey Bandgeek: I got to see your Boogie today and get his autograph. Realized while waiting in line that I should have worn my Boogie Fight Camp T-shirt. The little kid (under 2) in front of us thought it pretty weird but ok when the boys signed his jersey while he was wearing it but the sight of Nordy made him scream & cry. Can’t say I blame him. It went Scott, then Boogie, then it went downhill from there (Dumb, Dumber, & Nordy). Feel a little bad but not much for Dumb & Dumber as no one wants their autographs.
Modano and Jagr?? Are you kidding me? Dude, you should start your own NHL team. Call them the Minnesota Mold. Look into signing long term contracts with Chris Chelios, Jacques Lemaire, Doug Risebrough, and Mario Tremblay. I hear they’re available. Oh, and Patrick Roy would be great in goal…
kgoph, was it one line for all? How many were stepping out after Boogie (I know I would have)?
Is there any possible way Fletcher could package Nordy up in some sort of trade?
I’m not advocating trading Clutterbuck, but in the salary cap era, he is - so far - fitting the mold of a role player who gets recycled from team to team because of a lack of cap space. That’s not an issue for the Wild yet, and maybe he turns into a 20-goal scorer. Fan favorites like him do sometimes get traded.
What do people genuinely think his ceiling as a player is?
Yep, one line for all and unless you doubled backed thru the crowd, the only way out was past the Trio at the end. I tried to step a little away from the table to get away & not make eye contact but still wound up with an autographed 5X7 of each, so did the Mr. We already have one from a different years road tour so we really didn’t need 2 more copies in our house. We had commotion in front of us due to said kid screaming about Nordy plus waiting for the Mr.’s turn to be made it impossible to avoid, plus I am a little too polite sometimes. Boogie and Scott were nice though & worth it. We didn’t have Scott’s autograph yet & had other things we wanted Boogie’s on & they weren’t far from home or the Mr.’s job so it worked well to go.
Joel. What do you propose the wild do with no players to trade. I atleast say try to get the veteran scorers…. yes modano and jagr are an example
Explain to me how they can win playing up tempo hockey without the peopleto play that way
What do people genuinely think his ceiling as a player is?
I love the Cal fans here and I think Cal has a good enough shot to score 20 but how does this guy continue to play his game long term without getting hurt?
Word FFS.
Cluster will have to concentrate on making his hits more effective. Instead of running around without a plan.
His energy stood out in Lemaire’s system. With an uptempo game, he may fade into mediocrity.
KiPA…remember…11 goals from a Wild forward was a LOT last year… ![]()
Oh so it’s pile on Cal day. Well *middle finger* to all y’all.
Okay, kidding. Mostly.
You let Cal worry about not getting hurt. He’s a smart, adaptable player and he’ll eventually have to pick his spots a bit.
To your point, KiPA, in this salary cap era, a guy who makes that big an impact for as cheap as he is, you don’t sneeze at that either. You get rid of the million dollar role players like SRV if you’re gonna start throwing salary cap around.
Good point, FFS, on the potential injury. I know Cal supporters will say something like, “You can’t plan for him to get hurt” but the risk is there if he continues to be such a pinball. Do people remember Eric Lindros? He was plenty physical until a run of concussions ruined his career.
And indeed, kj, he scored a lot relative to the Wild.
What I think is Clutterbuck is a more disciplined Matt Cooke. Good for around a dozen or so goals, brings energy, big hitter, but not likely to be much more than that. Maybe I’m wrong.
Don’t get me wrong on one thing though: I love guys like Clutterbuck. We had one in Colby Armstrong. I’m just saying try not to get too attached. In this age, only franchise players are really guaranteed to hang around for a long time, and is Clutterbuck a franchise player?
To answer your question 5 players system
Cal Clutterbuck looks to have a ceiling of I would say 25 goals tops. Gillies I could see his tops being 12 goals
And what kind of contract will he ask for next, Ms. C? I know he’s cheap now, which is why I said the salary isn’t a concern for Minnesota right now. But if he asks for $1.5 million annually - or more - next offseason? And still provides mainly just hits, energy and 13 goals?
Say the Wild, as an example, sign the Sedins next month for a combined $12.5 million. Maybe Clutterbuck, feeling he’s so valuable, next year asks for more or longer than what Fletcher wants to give him. Who’s likely to be kept, Clutterbuck or the Sedins?
And I’m not picking on Clutterbuck. I’m just trying to prepare his particularly diehard fans that if his goal production doesn’t double, he might one day be a trade/free agent casualty.
Looks like JL will be an assistant coach for Team Canada in the 2010 Olympics.
Per TSN…
Lindy Ruff, Ken Hitchcock and Jacques Lemaire will be assistant coaches to Mike Babcock on Canada’s 2010 men’s Olympic hockey team, sources tell CTVOlympics.ca.
…
This will be the first Olympic experience for Lemaire, former Minnesota Wild coach, who won eight Stanley Cups as a player with the Montreal Canadiens and one with the 1995 New Jersey Devils. He is a two-time Jack Adams award winner.
- You get rid of the million dollar role players like SRV if you’re gonna start throwing salary cap around.
Solid point - it is hard to succeed in the NHL without players playing above their cap hit. All the harder if the cap goes down.
- Looks like JL will be an assistant coach for Team Canada in the 2010 Olympics.
So no players will want to play for them ![]()
So no players will want to play for them
Haha
*high five*
I think the upside is higher than some suggest. Ten or so goals in his rookie season whilst primarily focusing on the physical elements of the game is quite good. Having a coach to help him develop the offensive elements of his game plus more experience should reasonably another 10 goals a year.
I would seriously doubt Cal or his agent will be asking for $3Mil a year by the time his entry level contract is up. Remember he’ll still be an RFA for a few years so it’s easier to work out a new contract on the cheap. Your only real fear should be the offer sheet. Not that I’m trying to add fuel to the fire.
I’m just trying to prepare his particularly diehard fans that if his goal production doesn’t double, he might one day be a trade/free agent casualty.
yeah, One Day… not at the end of his first season though. I would much rather give him the chance to prove himself rather than sending him down the road and letting him flourish elsewhere.
We are paying Boogie 1.25 next season. I would rather trade Boogie (and I really do love the guy) and give that salary to Cluts. Mainly because Clusterbomb has teh possibility of turing into a decent scorer (20 goals per, maybe a few more). Boogie jsut doesn’t have that ability.
Once again, let me state that I’m not saying the Wild should trade Clutterbuck. But as soon as his name was even mentioned as a possibility, several people were acting as if their firstborn son was going to be traded. You’re not trading Ovechkin. That’s my point.
Clutterbuck’s valuable, and has room to grow, but you wouldn’t be trading a proven 50-goal scorer, and that seems to be the reaction.
TX-pull his shirt over his head and lump him up!
Roger that MrBlueSky!
Kevin, I get that. But you don’t trade a guy like C-Buck after just one season IMO. especially when he showed such a good upside. He has a good shot, prretty good speed and he can check hard. I would think as a GM you would want to try and develop a guy like that before just trading him away.
Having said that… if the right package came along…. pull the trigger. But there is no way I would dump C-Buck in favor of a similar palyer that scored a few more goals than he did (Fodtenko was mentioned). I would rather gamble on the fact that Bucket would score more this year.
I’m not a diehard fan of Clutterbuck. It is true that because his skills are limited he is easier to replace than others but what I do like about him is how he plays his role. So far despite being annoying to the opposition he has been pretty clean and disciplined. I can’t say the same for a lot of other players in his role.
He also has decent skills and a pretty nice shot.
That’s why I find him valuable. I think he can be a top of the line pest. One that has a lot of pluses but doesn’t hurt the team with stupid penalties.
He’s only played one year, it could change, but I like what I’ve seen so far.
Pests like Clutterbuck are far more useful, IMO, than enforcers like Boogaard.
That’s the real choice the team should be making this summer.
(recycled post)
While I agree with you re: C-Horse spending too much of the game laying on the ice (after throwing himself around), he did score 11 goals in primarily a checker’s role. Imagine what his goal total would be if he replaced Mitten’s, skated with Koivu and saw some PP time. And he’s only 21. (not saying he should have skated with Koivu, just trying to make a point). I hope that C-Nile dials back the hit count a bit and puts that energy into offense
NutterButter is one of the few bright spots on this roster IMO.
Clutterbuck will be the next SRV in about 5 years or less. He will get expensive and we won’t be able to afford him or someone will come and take his place.
according to Eklund…
*Demitra came out on local radio and stated that Gaborik had NOT bought a house. Ah, my favorite…”Real Estate Rumors!”
Does anyone see a harding trade to St. Louis panning out?
I would imagine Harding could backup, if not replace Mason.
And St. Louis has some nice forward prospects…
not to mention….T.J Oshie!
that team canada’s coaching staff is epic…….that was 4 of this generations best coaches…..there maybe 2 coaches in the nhl that can get close to them, and that is it……dang……how does that team lose with the players they will have and the coaching staff they will have…
keep clutter…..I don’t mind parting with shep and cuma for heatley……cuma is coming off of major surjury (wow, I can’t spell), so there is a chance he never becomes great…(he probobly will be quite good)
briere wasn’t a bad option either….what other good players are on the block?
maybe we can find a steal out there yet…
I wouldn’t expect Demo to say anything different. His agent is the GM, and Lord Groindemort is his BFF.
Let’s get some tampering picks!
aside from tj…what do the blues have that are good players?
I can think of only Johnson….
their forwards are distictly average…..imo
vancouver sucks…..plain and simple….
gaby is to become public enemy no. 1…supplanting bertuzzi/cook.
it is only fitting……
they need to sign a crappy annoying pest/enforcer so we can start calling them cunuckleheads again!
FOOD
food!
