Wild pursuing Tanguay; Correction on cap number; Third jersey teaser

Posted on August 21st, 2009 – 7:07 AM
By Michael Russo

Wish me luck.

In 90 minutes, my wisdom teeth are going to be ripped out of their sockets with a pair of rusty pliers. At least, that’s how my dream portrayed the scene before I woke up in a cold sweat. :)

I’m hoping it won’t be that violent or painful.

As you read in this morning’s paper here, the Wild is trying to sign free agent Alex Tanguay. One correction from today’s story: I wrote the roster’s 23 players have a cap hit of $51,611,827 for 23 players excluding Colton Gillies.

Wrong.

This is why the Miami Herald’s David J. Neal always tells me, “Mike, you shouldn’t be doing math.”

Actually, the error occurred because for some reason I entered Kyle Brodziak twice in my excel file. I just re-did it and 23 players including Gillies comes out to $51,503,494 (includes Mark Parrish’s buyout). Obviously this figure is unofficial, also includes James Sheppard’s potential entry-level bonuses and could change depending on who makes the team.

As of now, the roster I’m using to determine this is:

14 Forwards: Martin Havlat, Mikko Koivu, Andrew Brunette, Pierre-Marc Bouchard, Owen Nolan, Antti Miettinen, Eric Belanger, James Sheppard, Benoit Pouliot, Derek Boogaard, Cal Clutterbuck, Kyle Brodziak, Craig Weller, Colton Gillies.

7 Defensemen: Brent Burns, Kim Johnsson, Marek Zidlicky, Nick Schultz, Greg Zanon, Shane Hnidy, John Scott

2 Goalies: Niklas Backstrom, Josh Harding

Back to Tanguay, what my little math gaffe doesn’t change is the fact that GM Chuck Fletcher doesn’t have unlimited cap space to spend on Tanguay. Fletcher decided to be patient all summer hoping that a bargain would fall into his lap. Maybe this is it.

Because of Tanguay’s shoulder injury last season and the fact that his production slipped the past two seasons, his stock fell this summer and he’s been left looking for work. Reading between the lines of what agent Ritch Winter said yesterday, it sounds as if Tanguay may sign a one-year deal so he can go to a team, try to have a “career year” and reestablish his market for a big payday next summer.

Minnesota and Tampa Bay seem to be two teams hot after him, and I was told a few weeks back, Tanguay would love to play in Tampa. But there’s no doubt he’s strongly considering Minnesota.

As I’ve said on here since mid-July, it’s of my opinion the Wild is a scorer short still.

However, the big question: Is Tanguay the right guy to fill that role?

The answer from a fan’s point of view depends on how much more patient are you willing to be. Tanguay is the best left on the open market, and I’m saying this because from everything I’m hearing, Nikolai Zherdev’s mind is at $4 million or Russia.

If you’re willing to be more patient, there should eventually be a trade to be made deep into training camp or in the early part of the season.

If you’re unwilling to be more patient, well, Tanguay’s a gifted playmaker. Problem is he’s a gifted playmaker, not a gifted scorer. As good as he is setting up guys, his history says quite clearly that he’s allergic to shooting the puck and isn’t the grittiest tool in the shed. And the Wild already has a gifted playmaker and perimeter forward in Pierre-Marc Bouchard.

So, to be effective, Tanguay would basically have to play with a guy like Marty Havlat on the top line.

Just remember though: If Tanguay’s the guy the Wild signs, the Wild will be sandwiched close to the cap, meaning that’s the move folks. If there’s any future big trade, it would likely have to come at the trade deadline rather than earlier.

Fletcher has shown some interest in Zherdev, but I think he’s concerned about Zherdev’s motivation to play in Russia. He’s shown interest in Petr Sykora after having him in Anaheim and Pittsburgh. But Sykora, as good a scorer as he is, isn’t the best skater in the world. Contrary to the rumor mongers out there, the Wild has zero interest in Mike Comrie.

Fletcher said if the Wild can’t sign Tanguay, he’ll likely go into camp and maybe the season with this team, discover who emerges and then re-adjust from there as the trade market unfolds.

Benoit Pouliot will be given his sixth last chance. He certainly seems determined to emerge. He stuck around most of the summer and from all reports I’ve been given is working his butt off in the gym. He’s got a great chance of making the team because he requires waivers to be sent to the minors, meaning 29 teams could claim him for zippo if he doesn’t make the team. Fletcher is also hopeful Sheppard makes one giant offensive step this season. As I’ve mentioned, Gillies can be sent to the minors without waivers, but he’s also looking good this summer.

Also, it seems almost guaranteed, Fletcher said, that backup goalie Josh Harding will be on the team when the season starts.

I’d talk more extensively about all of this, but I’ll save it for training camp. Be a little more patient, and the Wild will be in the paper again daily.

Lastly, I’ve gotten all these emails for third jersey sneak previews. This is why you should follow me at twitter.com/russostrib. If you did, you would have gotten some hints about a month ago.

I’d describe it as a pretty traditional front. Green. MINNESOTA WILD in sort of a cursive writing. And I think that “M” in Minnesota will be an “M” you’ll start seeing on a ton of Wild merchandise. :)

Anyways, I’m not officially back to work yet. Unless there’s news, the blog will continue to be dormant until early next month. But you’ll be getting multi-daily blog updates and tweets and articles and Facebook updates and webcasts and …. soon enough.

Good luck Russo!

Tanguay eh? Playmaker who doesn’t shoot or play particularly physical eh? As Russo pointed out, we already have one of those. Though, if PMB does end up at C, it might be nice to still have a playmaker on wing. It also may mean PMB = trade bait (if he doesn’t fill that C hole).

Shoulder injury worries me. More so with Tanguay than with Havlat. Were they opposite shoulders? 2 halves makes a whole?

If Tanguay is signed and it puts the Wild close to the cap, it also doesn’t necessarily bar the Wild from picking up another player (like one from CHI) in a trade. It just makes it a little more difficult because the cap hit coming this way would need to closely match the cap hit going the other way.

AustinTXwildfan says:

August 21st, 2009 at 7:36 am

Eff that Goody. I’d rather retain PMB than stick it out with Tanguay. Tanguay is a lot older than PMB. PMB had been pretty dang healthy so far in his career. I just don’t see the benifit of letting him go and keeping Tanguay. Unless you are trading PMB (as well as a + or 2 probably) for a truely gifted goal scorer, then maybe I’d come around.

Bisker82 says:

As far as Tanguay goes, I’d take a pass, unless he would sign a minimal 1 year contract, and go into camp as is. I think a trade with a team needing to clear cap space is still the best option, but I’ll roll with any decision CF makes.

ARMYMOM1 says:

August 21st, 2009 at 8:03 am

I think there will be more team’s trying to get under the cap as we get closer to the season starting so there could be more player’s available later that are better then Tanguay correct?

TheFastOne says:

August 21st, 2009 at 8:07 am

IMO Tanguay isn’t what the Wild need. I’d rather see them wait it out until training camp and entertain the idea of a trade.

Wafer says:

August 21st, 2009 at 8:08 am

Not interested in Tanguay. Though it would be interesting to see a Tanguay-Koivu-Havlat line backed up by a PMB-Shep-Nolan line. Still, not interested. I think the top two lines should each bring something different.

ARMYMOM - There’s a reason most of us ignore MKIA, or as we call him, MKVN. Also, check out the wiki for a better explanation.

Bisker82 says:

August 21st, 2009 at 8:08 am

That’s kind of my take. But I trust CF to make the appropriate moves he deems necessary to improve the team.

P.S. Welcome to the fold!! I like your moniker, being that I myself served over 23 years in the Army.

AustinTXwildfan says:

August 21st, 2009 at 8:08 am

I agree with ARMYMOM. Pass on Tangy and wait for someone to bite on a trade.

Nick in New York says:

August 21st, 2009 at 8:13 am

LOL @ Tangs and Butch on the same line, passing it back and forth to each other the whole shift like that scene in Semi-Pro.

It’d be like when two shrinks are married to each other, trying to have a discussion at dinner
“How was your day, honey?”
“Okay”
“How do you feel about that?”
“Why did you ask me that question?”
“Why do you need to be so hostile?”
“How does that make you feel?”
“How does that make YOU feel?”
…ad infinitum…

I say no to Tangs. Keep some powder dry and give the kids a carrot heading to Traverse City and/or camp. If Poo makes the team and stays here, and Shep can regain his 3-year-old form then we go from a team with some question marks on scoring and an iffy stable of young kids to a team that’s improving with good input from it’s young, former high draft picks.

Casualobserver Your the one that says the Wild wont make the playoffs right ? I said they will and should based on power rankings.

Fletcher the one who you were trying to protect by creating all kinds of excuses for said they would make the playoffs like MISTER KNOW IT ALL SAYS. + fricken 1 for Mister Know it all

Lets have an honest moment for a change on here. I gave my reasons for what fueled my fire about the Modano stuff. This childhood BS should stop. Be real

My favorite player growing up was Neal Broten.

It is entertainment folks. I have told you several times on here the reasons for my business concept and my views are always manipulated beyond belief

The player would be motivated I am thinking so you may get top notch production equal to other top centers in the league. That was my main point all along and then I started hearing all of this BS and then I started to get pissed and on and on and on

Hello Russo regulars, just a quick question…Is Fletchers strategy of waiting for another team to make a salary dump to trade really the best idea? If another team no longer wants to be burdened by a huge contract, why should we be so willing to take it on? Just curious on what you guys really think of that, sorry if it has been discussed allot already, I have not gone through all of the comments.

ARMYMOM1 says:

The Army made me have my wisdom teeth removed. I wasn’t having any trouble with them but I guess they wanted practice for their “dentist”. My one tooth got broke in to about 30 pieces and it took him forever to clean it out. Add to that fact that the novacaine wasn’t properly administered. Thank gawd for Percocet!!! Not to worry Russo, i’m sure your procedure will go just fine!

Mister Know it all says:

kj- I was not looking for Russo to mention Modano since I am sure the last thing the new gm would want is that in the media

Fletcher cant make a deal for him before the season unless Modano himself requests the trade.

Now if Fletcher had the conversation with Dallas and they are NOT open to a trade for like a second or third round “Harding asset” draft pick, and Dallas is not willing to deal him then no chance of it happening at the beginning of the season. Modano would have to request the trade.

I don’t think that Modano will play his last hockey with Dallas. That is my prediction

Its not a dumb idea to look at him for reasons I already have mentioned

AustinTXwildfan says:

DarkHelmet. For starters, you have an awesome handle. Gotta love a Spaceballs reference.

As for your question. I would rather see the Wild ‘wait and see’ rather than have them pick up another guy that has injury concerns. Also the fact that Tangy is a PMB clone, and we need a scorer, comes to mind as an issue. I am not all for taking on a big contract a la Heatly or other. I would rather the Wild wait a bit and see if they can trade Harding +1 to someone for a guy that can pot 20+ or a solid prospect that is NHL ready with scoring potential. Of course this is just my two cents. I don’t know how feasible my scenario is either… but in an ideal world, this would happen.

ms.conduct says:

August 21st, 2009 at 9:08 am

Nah, Nick, Cal’s gonna be just fine. All he’s ever done is trend upward.

Somehow I think Brusty may need the affirmations himself, what with being pushed down the depth chart by Dubie and the untradeable Harding in a contract year and in a pair of leagues overrun with goalies.

Hell, *I* may need the affirmations (or something stronger) watching him sit on the bench. I only have one season left with him and the last one was kinda effed up by injuries, so I just wanna see my guy play goal. Lots and lots of hot, crazy… goal.

kj says:

August 21st, 2009 at 9:09 am

DarkHelmet…that’s an excellent question.

IMHO, the Wild would take on a long term contract for a proven scorer that still has upside. Salary dumps aren’t always about a 6-10 mil per year player.

Wafer says:

August 21st, 2009 at 9:14 am

Anyone who complains we’re not getting a name planer needs to understand that the NAME isn’t important, it’s how they play: the style of play, the numbers they put up, the role they fill.

Put another way: why on earth would the Wild ever acquire, say, Chris Simon when we already have Derek Booga–Oh, wait.

kj says:

August 21st, 2009 at 9:14 am

kj- I was not looking for Russo to mention Modano since I am sure the last thing the new gm would want is that in the media

I was.

Jake the Wall says:

August 21st, 2009 at 9:29 am

Tanguay working the puck to either Nolan or Havlat might be a nice thing. Still, I’d rather pass on Tang. If the Wild had a few more proven finishers, another play maker would be just about right. As it is, no.

Dark Helmet, the thing about waiting to see what cap-tied teams do isn’t just about taking on a ‘bad’ contract. There could be some young talent moving because a team just won’t be able to sign them, or need to move them so that they can resign a top star or two to a new contract. That is part of why Chicago is in the situation it’s in right now.

Five Forward System says:

August 21st, 2009 at 9:35 am

Because it is obvious CF spends more time on the phone than DR, I am confident he has as acurate as possible read on the trade market. Between the pending quake on San Jose’s roster and the Heatly situation, something is going to shake out. However, I think it would take some luck for the Wild to have the right “assets” to sell for one of the better players that will likely move over the next few weeks. As a result, I think it is safer to conclude that Tangeray on a 1 year deal is the tonic this roster needs this season as the Wild would still be in position to be a player for next year’s major UFAs.

WildinATX says:

August 21st, 2009 at 9:38 am

FFS — you just wanted to say Tangeray and tonic in the same sentence.

Five Forward System says:

August 21st, 2009 at 9:45 am

Busted :) but if CF doesn’t love his chances of getting a good player through a trade I would rather enjoy the Wild season with a Tangeray tonic than hoping Shep, Benny or Mittens can be a top shelf player.

WildinATX says:

August 21st, 2009 at 9:48 am

If we do get Tanguay I think his nickname should be Tonic. :)

Nick in New York says:

August 21st, 2009 at 9:54 am

I think hoping for top shelf status from Shep, Benny or Mittens is a recipe for disappointment.

Granted past performance (under JL) may not be indicative of future success (under TR), and I realize someone has to play with Mikko and Havlat, but…

I’m hoping Benny just makes and stays on the team, and if we can get consistent 2nd line minutes/production out of him that’s awesome.

Shep, who knows.

Mittens I thought proved conclusively he’s not top line material last season. I think he’s a comfortable 2nd line guy, but he could be an ace 3rd line guy just as easily IMO.

I guess we’ll see if TR can create alchemy.

AustinTXwildfan says:

August 21st, 2009 at 9:59 am

I still like Tangy, but it is too close to his actual name.

Nice article Nick. I can’t believe that guy placed Hards above Bobby Lou and the Boulin Wall. Maybe he is just trying to increase his trade value…

Russo, don’t worry bought the wisdom teeth. Got mine done over a long weekend my junior year of college. The only thing I really remember about it is the nurse saying your gonna feel sleepy, and then a different nurse saying time to wake up, and then an orderly taking me down to the doors and helping me get in my moms car. I slept and ate jello at my parents for a few days and then drove back up here to go back to classes. The Mr had his done our senior year of high school, he was drugged up and happy for days.

Wallshot says:

August 21st, 2009 at 10:17 am

I’ve got no problem with Tanguay as long as he’s signed to a 1 year deal only. Let’s face it - we’re going to suck this year anyway. Might as well make an improvement while we can.

minwild93 says:

August 21st, 2009 at 10:19 am

Russo-
Hang in there, buddy. I had my wisdom teeth removed–in two separate surgeries–this spring; the fear was that taking out all four at once would leave my jaw ripe for fracture. Not cool. I’m doubting your situation is that bad, so take heart–you’re already one up.

Thankfully, both days I had a Wild game to watch at night while convalescing on the couch, removing the gauze in between attempts to eat (don’t slurp!) Jello or pudding. Stay hydrated, too.

It’s rough at the start, but you just have to tell yourself to stick with it for a couple of weeks and you should be cool. It will seem arduous for a while, and the first time you forget the food rules and chew something harder (only to hear a loud “pop” come from your mouth) will be a sufficient freak-out moment.

You’ll be ready for the season pretty soon and will hopefully forget that you ever had the procedure.

Just be patient–which I know isn’t easy–and don’t be afraid to call the surgeon after a few days if something doesn’t seem right.

Thanks, as always, for your great work; we look forward to an update on how you’re feeling. I’m praying for you, man.

As for hockey, if CF thinks Tanguay is the best scorer we’ll have a shot at getting, let’s see if he can put up a contract year-type season. That wouldn’t hurt a bit…

ATX, the NHL 10 demo is pretty sick! Did you get a chance to check it out?

Yeah I played it last night. I am on the fence with with it still though. The gameplay seems a bit slower, which is a minus I think. But the Board play is actually quite awesome. I am not a fan of the First-Person fighting either. I love the new goalie animations… there are just a lot of pluses and minuses… I can’t decide on it. I’ll probably end up crumbling and buying it though.

Oh Mister, why do you take such offense when someone calls you out on your childhood dream? I wish we could have a realitic and reasonable moment. Unfortunately, with you it’s like talking to a dining room table. Your talk of business plans and entertainment value as the basis for your proposition is pathetic and overplayed to the max.

P.S. of course everyone in the organization is going to say we will make the playoffs. If you’re such a businessman, you would understand that this is the type of talk that sells tickets. For those of us able to realistically view the team as it is currently composed, we can see that we need a scorer; preferrably a center. I’ve been saying this all along, just as you have repeatedly repeated your crazy rants. Bottom line: without the addition of a scorer, Wild do not make the playoffs.

There you go buddy, I will leave it up to you to do what you do; twist my words and attempt to rub yourself on the back (and other parts as you re-live your childhood) while doing it.

TheFastOne says:

Encrim, did you play on “hardcore” mode at all? The passing is uber-difficult compared to being spoiled with spot on passing in NHL09.

The game is slower but feels more realistic IMO than any other hockey game (and I’ve played my fair share!).

Fighting Wild says:

August 21st, 2009 at 12:54 pm

Yelling SIOUX at the end of the national anthem has been a tradition for every home game for the last 30 years. I do not believe it to be disrespectful as I have served in our military in desert storm, my father & 5 uncles in vietnam, one uncle in Korea, and 3 uncles in WWII.

Sioux fans are some of the most dedicated to their team of any I have seen. They rarely if ever boo their own team, even if they are playing lousy. & Yes, they are changing the name after this year I believe. The tribes did not approve the name & the state agreed to change it. The name Fighting Sioux is actually a state law & needs the govt to change it.

that is the sort of cursive writing they will use…..

(of course only if it is green and black…..maybe a little red..)

Sioux? says:

That is find and dandy. I am proud of people that have served for our country. My grandfathers, uncles, cousins, etc have all served as well. And of course I assumed that was a tradition of theirs. However, it is disrespectful of the national anthem. The last I heard, you are supposed to show respect to that song when being sung, not sully it by changing the words. I will never go to a game with the sioux again due to it being a tradition. I will not support their team in the least. Either way, I apologise, it still pisses me off that people would do that.

Fighting Wild, argon, Sioux?: argon’s right: A lot of teams replace their name in the last line of the anthem. That doesn’t make it right; and it doesn’t imply insult, but insult could easily be inferred.

All it means is that all teams’ fans have the capacity to be dooshbags, and to claim that one teams’ fans are awesomer or worse than others’ shows those fans don’t realize that every teams’ fans say the same thing.

Win/win or lose/lose; it depends on how holy you hold the anthem.

A bit behind now.. but I had to say I agree with this in regards to NHL 10. I love the ‘feel’ of the new passing system. It actually looks more like they are ‘catching’ the puck properly. And when the wrap it around behind the net after gaining possession on a dump-n-chase, it looks very real. I think the new passing is my favorite thing about NHL 10. In 09 it was just tape-to-tape every time it seemed.

Before a home Caps game, the crowd will shout “Red” when it comes up in the anthem (rockets red glare) and then will shout “O” during the last stanza (O say does that…).

The Red shout is because that’s the team color (and the team media push this year) and the O shout is for Ovetchkin. Drives me nuts, personally.

TFO, ATX: I think all the new stuff is great–even the fighting for which normally I couldn’t care less. You’ve already documented the main points, and I agree on all of them. All features, especially the new passing, will add a very authentic aesthetic that are improvements on an already amazing offering.

There’s one subtle change that’s super exciting for me (because I’m lame): this is the first edition that I can remember that has separate settings sliders for Human and PC players. Thank Fn Dog. It’s about time.

Also, drawing penalties after the whistle will now become my specialty, a la Cal “Go ahead; facewash me” Clutterbuck. :D

Yeah, let’s pass on Tanguay and keep ourselves flexible for a possible trade a little way down the line. Tanguay is not the missing piece here, and signing him will make getting that piece just about impossible.

Wallshot says:

August 21st, 2009 at 2:55 pm

Every time there is talk of a top-six forward coming here whether it is by signing or trading, I see post after post saying “Pass on so-and-so” “So-and-so=Do not want”, etc.

So who exactly do you guys expect us to get? I don’t think Crosby or Ovechkin are going to be available any time soon.

TheFastOne says:

August 21st, 2009 at 3:01 pm

Escrim / ATX - I’d like to see an “hardcore mode only” league for the online play. I think that would get rid of a lot of the glitching and keep the games a little more authentic.

kj says:

August 21st, 2009 at 3:01 pm

wallshot…if Tanguay were such a stud acquisition, why is he still on the market?

Because he’s a ‘fringe’ top six player that missed a lot of ice time last year due to injury.

He’s a top six player on the Wild’s offensively challenged roster.

If you pick him up…there’s no other deal the Wild can make where they pick up salary.

I would prefer to add via trade than to remove all options. There is a bit of a honeymoon with the new management. It’s ok to wait a little longer.

kj says:

ATX, I get ya. I experienced that stuff, too. That doesn’t make sense, yet it doesn’t ring with a certain realism, eh? :)

That’s why the Human/PC settings sliders will be helpful: eliminating other similar things like penalties called on idiot teammates. I think I leaked a joyous single tear when I saw that slider in the settings.

Wafer says:

August 21st, 2009 at 3:25 pm

So who exactly do you guys expect us to get? I don’t think Crosby or Ovechkin are going to be available any time soon.

I think we’re pretty quick to find the downside in the possibilities, and I can see your point.

However, there are a lot of players out there who would fill a role we’ve already got filled. We’ve got only so many round holes available and if they’re all full, are you going to try shoving a square peg in a round hole for the sake of filling the hole? If the downside is that you can’t extract that square peg later without some pain and consternation. I’d rather wait for the right peg to fill that hole.

Uh…I think I got lost in my own analogy. If you can direct the way out, let me know.

I’ve always like Tanguay, but Russo make s a good point about maybe waiting a little longer and getting a bargain before the season. This move would put us dangerously close to the cap and maybe prevent a move near the dealine if we’re in contention. I guess I’d be OK with either outcome.
