Woo… the death of the original russo’s rants is slow and painful :P

WildinATX says:

October 19th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

So … how exactly will we know when these “kinks” are worked out?

AustinTXwildfan says:

October 19th, 2009 at 4:30 pm

When this one stops working I guess? Some people are already on the new one. It’s bad though. Only 10 posts per page… you have to return to the main screen every time you want to post something new. I am on board with finding another place to discuss all things MN Hockey… not that I will stop reading Russo… I just won’t post.

Niveous says:

October 19th, 2009 at 4:31 pm

Anyway we can prolong these logging in kinks? I’d hate to see Russoville die such an inglorious death.

I would like to see Bruno be named Captain but I know it will be Koivu.

And, if you missed it, Armymom1, no topic is ever dead on the blog. Things get raked over a thousand times.

AustinTXwildfan says:

October 19th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

If I knew how to hax, then I would sabotage the new format somehow… too bad I am not a hacker.

John Notermann says:

October 19th, 2009 at 4:44 pm

I hope it is Koivu or won of the returning Wild players…

Five Forward System says:

+1 and I bet CF/TR wish they would have done it at the start of the season.

The little Voldemort cave boat is filled. Me, Bozak, Douda, and Bea Arthur blowup doll are ready to leave Thunder Island for the winter. Dion is bringing a Missing Link herd member back on the boat this week, and he’ll take a few remaining people with him when he leaves.

Encrimson'd says:

If anyone comes up with a suitable replacement for our belov’d Russoville, I’m all ears. Nothing will keep me away from the daily Russo fix, but that format is unusable for productive hockey talk and general day-wasting.

Hot Rod Goon says:

October 19th, 2009 at 4:58 pm

I’m disgusted, first I get laid off and have to give up cable TV, so I can’t watch Wild games, then the NHL destroys our great forum with their abortion of a format that won’t let me register via my phone, and now the Strib destroys our great blog with a horrible abortion that’s nearly impossible to navigate…now I have nowhere to go to talk with Wild fans via my Blackberry…thanks a lot…this has been the worst year ever…

Encrimson'd says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

HRG, at least the Wild are doing well–oh… :)

phil says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:02 pm

Maybe the Don can lean on the tech people to keep the format we had?? With all the clicking you have to do is it maybe just a way to “increase” their web traffic to get more ad revenue?

AustinTXwildfan says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:05 pm

<i.With all the clicking you have to do is it maybe just a way to “increase” their web traffic to get more ad revenue?

That actually makes sense. But that would be a terrible reason beacuse this will likely decrease clicks IMO. I refreshed this page hundereds of times a day it seemed. I likely won’t eevn bother clicking on anything in the new format… Lame.

Five Forward System says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:08 pm

With all the clicking you have to do is it maybe just a way to “increase” their web traffic to get more ad revenue?

Bingo.

AustinTXwildfan says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:09 pm

Oh and there is no way they change it back. I am sure that new format cost them a pretty penny to design and launch. Should have put that money to better use, because you jsut spent money to decrease traffic. Good job Strib.

ARMYMOM1 says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:13 pm

AustinTXwildfan I see you were able to keep your same handle on the new blog other’s have had to change name’s.

AustinTXwildfan says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

yeah Armymom. I signed up for it a long time ago for some reason… so it’s been there for awhile ;)

ARMYMOM1 says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:20 pm

So how do we know who the regular’s are now if they changed there name? Anyone have a new name on the new blog?

jimlove says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:22 pm

I have a russoville-saving suggestion, but am not sure it’s legal.

Google can host websites for free. Their page design is simple and can work in the form of a rolling blog with posts and comments. Thus, we would simply need to copy/paste the Don’s “Rants” and let our normal townsfolk go to town (pun intended) posting away their comments.

Come to think of it, this would decrease troll traffic as well as trolls wouldn’t know where to find this website since they only log on to complain when something foolish happens. We could have thought of this during the Chris Simon tragedy.

Let me know if you all think this is legal (i.e. not stealing Russo’s work) and if you’re interested. I can get it set up!

AustinTXwildfan says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:23 pm

Dunno Armymom… I guess they will just have to announce it like DarkHelmet did… but he said he is done for good because of the switch.

AustinTXwildfan says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:26 pm

jimlove. i think if it’s like a “fan page” it’s legal… and as long as you post links to the actual website that the story comes from, it’s legal. Look at any video game blog (destructoid, kotaku), they do this kind of stuff all the time.

On that note… I am heading home. Laterz.

hopefully st will come to their senses….

until then….night all…and have a pleasant day….

kj says:

Count me as one of the haters.

The new blog format sux. Jeez, I am trying so hard this year to be positive too. But, they leave me no choice :(

We will see if they revert to a more pleasant user experience. If not, there’s plenty of Russotans that will become more productive!!!

phil says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:44 pm

I spose the powers that be don’t care, they’re just counting on new people to fill the void which is the new format if we don’t come back? Perhaps we’re seeing a page in Russoville history turning - out with the old (us) and in with the new (them). This blog was one of the VERY few things I liked about the ST…

Wild Road Tripper says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:49 pm

Can we have a doubleheader on Tuesday? Naming of a new Wild captain, and the flogging of whomever made the decision to change ‘Russo’s Rants’ to a less-user-friendly format?

Argonbeast0034 says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:50 pm

flogging?

can’t we just hang the lot of them?

Argonbeast0034 says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:50 pm

they don’t deserve pain….

WildinATX says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:50 pm

Someone mentioned something similar to this a couple of weeks ago. I think that copying and reposting his posts in their entirety is not ok, but maybe something short (i.e., “new blog post”) with a link to Russo’s original post and then a comment section could be feasible.

WildinATX says:

October 19th, 2009 at 5:52 pm

If not, there’s plenty of Russotans that will become more productive!!!

By “more productive,” do you mean a more regular visitor of icanhascheezburger.com?

GreenStar says:

October 19th, 2009 at 6:06 pm

how exactly will we know when these “kinks” are worked out?

when the don says they are worked out.

I’m guessing the new format is so they can spam you with email and ads. 10 posts per page mean many, many page hits.

regardless, the new format sux. what is the difference between that and just commenting on articles? nothing.

can’t understand why the strib is so afraid of success.

saladin says:

October 19th, 2009 at 6:07 pm

I like Bruno okay, but if its not Koivu, he’s gone in a few years IMO. Bruno is too old and fragile. He will be out enough the next year or two that someone else will have to be the captain anyway.

Koivu is the complete player and leader,on and off the ice. I hope TR and Fletch are not dumb enough to name someone other than Mikko.

fatboy says:

The Stranger says:

October 19th, 2009 at 6:36 pm

Also, rumor has it that there’s a blog section on the wikia page. But I wouldn’t go around telling everyone to go there for commentary or anything. Nope. Not me.

So don’t go here. Nope. Stay away.

WildinATX says:

The Stranger says:

WATX - you need an account on Wikia.

Five Forward System says:

October 19th, 2009 at 6:43 pm

NiNY and WRT I believe but the other options look promising as well

The Stranger says:

October 19th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Honestly, though, I prefer the google group thing that jimlove set up.

jimlove says:

October 19th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

I’ll get the google thing to work. Give me until tomorrow, and I should be able to devise a system and manipulate google’s set up (currently, I believe that anyone in the world can view the site, but only google account holders can post comments).

I think I can work a way around that. It might be a tad more cumbersome than utopia (this blog), but still far and away better than what the strib is doing.

Holler! The link will stay the same (http://sites.google.com/site/russoville/discussion)so check back!

kgopher says:

October 19th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

Keep me posted on where we go. Armymom, my handle is different on the new blog but I make sure to identify myself. It a pain from my cell but at least I can comment and access it. Will miss this.

Fredo says:

October 19th, 2009 at 7:12 pm

We had this same thing happen with my Notre Dame football site.

We created a Google groups board and it worked great. All you need is a sponsor/moderator to set it up and allow people in. The benefit is that person could launch multiple IP posters and d-bags. We linked articles to avoid any issues.

It can be done and it works quite well. All you need is a volunteer sponsor.

I watched the Vikings site go in the tank and now the hockey…Wolves and Twins will follow and die.

Too bad…they had a good thing going.

Fredo says:

October 19th, 2009 at 7:13 pm

BTW, you can make a google group entirely private..it doesn’t have to be read by everyone with poster privilege. You can do that but you don’t have to.

Bandgeek says:

October 19th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

jimlove; if you can get the google thing to work that would be great.

Argonbeast0034 says:

October 19th, 2009 at 8:17 pm

jim love…how would one get access to post there?

The Stranger says:

October 19th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

My only issue with the google groups thing is that i value my anonymity :)

Argonbeast0034 says:

October 19th, 2009 at 8:40 pm

we won’t let this thread die!

this page will have 600 comments on it before the strib pulls the plug..

….sad…..an era passes…

kgopher says:

October 19th, 2009 at 8:57 pm

jimlove, tried it, you don’t need gmail but you need a google accont. Couldn’t figure out how to post comments on the page, not sure if it is the fact that I am using my cell or not.

kgopher says:

October 19th, 2009 at 9:05 pm

My issue with going to Nick/Kevin in PA/WRT’s blog Hitting the Post is that I can’t post to it from cell, I can read it, I can read the comments, but I can’t leave one. Same with ms. c’s. And I use my cell 99% of the time to read and post,

M 03 says:

October 19th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

jimlove: thanks and keep us posted.
HRG: sorry. Stay as positive as you can. At least it is hockey season.
Encrimson’d & kj: when/where are you next music gigs?

Hey all, thanks for making this Russoville thing fun. Hopefully Michael will find a way (including technology) to take care of himself, then us. Until then, this is bittersweet.

Nick in New York says:

October 19th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

I’ve been to the new thing…and I think it stinks.

I don’t think it’s reversable, but perhaps our reactions would be stronger if we coordinate? I’ll even volunteer. If you want to voice some displeasure or at least stay abreast of what others come up with for alternatives, send me an email to my screen name here (no spaces) at hotmail dot com.

Give me your Russoville handle so I can keep track.

I’ll try to keep abreast of new options (like jimlove’s above) but also feel free to send them to me if you see one/put one together.

Personally, I will absolutely not stop reading Russo, but I just am not going to get the same things out of the new format for Russoville that I did here.

Michael up North says:

October 19th, 2009 at 9:56 pm

Well, the new one isn’t a blog - it’s a comments feature for articles.

I did fire an email to the Don, but I feel this is a huge mistake with the new format. It should be called “Russo’s Comments”.

1. I don’t register for websites. Sorry, I’m not giving my corporate email to the Strib spam department, or anyone else.

2. The format blows. Can’t read it on my smartphone for crap. And the rest of you all summed it up well.

3. We should just stay here and comment here on what Russo writes there.

Ideas?

sunshine says:

October 19th, 2009 at 9:58 pm

I think its stupid that they use the comments section for blogs. Blogs are forums/message boards, a place for long winded and multi voices in a discussion. The comments section is used for news articles and one time postings.

Urgh!

sunshine says:

October 19th, 2009 at 9:59 pm

The Strib just got out of bankruptcy not too long ago. Maybe leaving wordpress was a money-savings action.

woodcock says:

October 19th, 2009 at 10:02 pm

I expect I am done with this “blog” now. It is no longer a blog but simply posting messages to the Strib site. This has been fun. See you all. I am in Section 102. Bye bye.

I wonder if the star tribune outsourced the design/build of their “new and improved” system to the fanball.com guys….

Niveous says:

October 19th, 2009 at 10:15 pm

Getting out of Wordpress doesn’t make a lot of sense seeing that it’s an open source project and doesn’t cost you a dime. I’ve got two blogs of my own on Wordpress and other than the hosting on it, I don’t pay a thing. They could have hosted it directly with Wordpress which costs some money, but if you have a web presence at all, why the hell would you do that?

No, this was one of those things that I’ve seen at so many organizations with some web guru who’s only good at one type of web technology…with enough clout, they convince the powers that be who are not tech savvy that their expertise is the magic bullet. There’s no questions about trying to see what the people who read it need, nor is there any type of understanding of building a community. The theory is to break it and let the community (what’s left of it) adjust.

If they continue this, I’ll still come to Russo for the news, but the discussion will soon be overrun by the “regular Strib posters” who seem to poison whatever they touch.

If a new site starts up, that’s great. It would be better with a firm hand to guide it along though. Otherwise it will end up like August with six hundred posts talking about the same thing for the eightieth time.

sunshine says:

October 19th, 2009 at 10:24 pm

yep, if its the “new” comments section for the blog, then I am likely to be outa here, too.

If you don’t see me on the comments section, then its been fun. We don’t always agree but the discussions have always been interesting and informative.

Mister Know it all says:

October 19th, 2009 at 11:03 pm

I happened to see the new blog and it clearly was not a blog, so what is that they are trying to do ? very strange to change something this popular with advisers and all without an explanation of what they are trying to do.

If there is no benefit for the Star tribune to have a blog then why did they start it for and continue it for this long.

So what we don’t understand is motive

Here is a couple likely motives

(1) The Wild are big advitisers with the Star and Tribune and Leipold may be pissed at some comments that are posted on here. The Wild certainly would not let a blog like this exist at wild.com

(2) Russo rants advertised free spirited open opinion. Does the Startribune not like the image of the blog ? Reason being similar to the Vikings blog

Final comment: Censorship

jimlove says:

October 19th, 2009 at 11:06 pm

I would like to offer the closest thing to home I think we’ll be able to have. I have set up this site to do the following:

Anyone has access
Anyone can post comments
Anyone can view comments

To answer Encrisom’d’s question he posted… it’s going well.

The only problem I’m running into is having the page refresh itself when comments are entered.

I’m not sure that it’s a userproblem (me) but rather a google problem.

Again, the link if you’d like to check it out, my fellow russovillians (not that you’re villains)

WildinATX says:

October 19th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

but perhaps our reactions would be stronger if we coordinate?

I do know that Mr. ATX facebooked (I know, sounds dirty) Russo a while ago, who forwarded on our concerns. It appears that they have fallen on deaf ears.

If the Strib is doing this for extra page hits, I think someone should have told them that we could have helped them in that department if they had let us. Also, I think that many of us (in particular the out of towners) would have paid for subscriptions if that would have saved the old format. So many other options than them paying craploads of money to buy a new blog “system” that will lead to fewer hits by us.

I’m sad. :(

jimlove says:

October 19th, 2009 at 11:25 pm

Another update…

The site works. Your comments will be posted with no google login.

The only downfall right now is the automation of the process which will be sorted out in due time….

WildinATX says:

October 19th, 2009 at 11:28 pm

If Russo had asked us to click on the advertiser links once a day, we all would have done it. If this is about money, I can come up with at least two ideas that would have helped avoid this. We all could have come up with two ideas, and they all would have been better than this.

Russoville is moving to a new forum. We will update when we have figured out where.

ok, well, I can get an account for GTRCMBSHOP, I can find the way to reply, I can type a reply but I can’t post the reply from my phone on the regular browser. On opera mini I can’t find the reply. Will try bolt.

I like the format, just have to get it working.

The herd can look after itself. If they need any help, Tyler and Dennis will be in charge. I believe Tyler has convinced a former Denver teammate, Anthony Maiani, to help if necessary.

WHOOHOOO, I can get GTRCMBSHOP on my blackberry and post using the bolt browser that GreenStar suggested. I am fine with moving there. Thanks for the help guys.

Is there anyway Russo could strike out on his own Blog without violating any employment contracts with the STrib?

IGoWrules says:

Thank God I just found this is still working. I checked out the new format and it sucks a**. What were they thinking in dismantling Russoville?

IGOWR, it’s all about the money I am sure. More clicks = more ad $$ probably…

ATX, I’ms sure that probably has something to do with it, but that format still sucks. I don’t remember who posted about flogging whomever changed the format, but I’m all for it…just as long as it is a long and drawn out floggingl…like several days/weeks.

You know, maybe we’re thinking about this all wrong. Some have suggested it’s about saving money - which is probably a pretty good guess. Though maybe they aren’t really worried about increasing ad revenue, but decreasing what they pay out. Maybe they’re trying to drive away posters so they can eventually do away with the comments all together? In which case they’re doing a fantastic job - raises all around!

Michael,

Like it. Have you checked out the other ideas listed earlier? I haven’t had time yet

Yeah, i was noodling with the google thing, and i have yet to try to make a post to HTP - i understand there’s been some errors there from smartphones.

I know everyone liked the wordpress thing, so I figured I’d quick set one up and see if it could be easily configured to allow reading the blog, and commenting in a second area.

Next step, parsing Russo’s blog into a display on that site, so you can see what he wrote to comment on.

Need to get Russo to sign on, lol.
