I love the Internets!

Yeah, the Web can be a gigantic time suck, but having access to pretty much everything that’s printed pretty much everywhere is seriously swell. Some interesting wine-pegged articles I’ve come across of late:

*The L.A. Times did a dandy job of a trend that was the talk of Napa on my recent trip there and among wine folks here since then with this story on how the Millennial generation is approaching wine. They are the future, indeed, and their inquisitiveness and open-mindedness augur well for the wine world, especially since Boomers have long seemed set in their imbibing ways (with help from Mssrs. Parker, Laube, Tanzer, etc.).

Money quote: “Millennials take disappointing wines in stride. And even when they find a wine they love, they aren’t likely to buy a case of it. … Tomorrow they expect to find a new wine they’ll like just as much or more.”

*A fascinating piece from the Guardian in Britain recaps the chatter at a conference on how climate change could affect the wine world.

Money quote: “So, it could be farewell to the classic aromas of cigar boxes and flavours of slightly unripe black currants and green peppers that are the hallmarks of claret today, and hello to mouth-filling, rich, spicy, more peppery tastes that are rather more like Chateauneuf-du-Pape.”

The good news: If the planet’s warming trend continues at its current pace, maybe we’ll be making some dandy syrahs up her in Tundra-land in a half-century or so. :-)

*And I assume a lot of y’all have heard about Amazon’s plan to sell wine. This article contains the understatement of the week: “In entering the wine business, Amazon.com will face wide-ranging challenges in delivering purchases to customers because of complex and varying regulations governing alcohol sales in the 50 states.”
