Empowering play

Talk about your tall orders: “Empowering Women in Africa” is one that perhaps only wine, that great unifier and motivator, can pull off.
Actually, it’ll take a lot more than wine, but that’s not a bad peg to start with. A series of wine dinners spread around the Twin Cities will help provide funds for a new university in Nairobi, Kenya, more specifically for a nursing school.
It’s a collaboration between entrepreneur Daphne C. Keute and the Woodbury WineStyles store, where the six wines that will be served at the dinners, called (pun alert) “Giraffrican Mix,” will be sold (with 5 percent of the proceeds from those sales also going to the cause).
I’ll admit to having a soft spot in my heart for causes involving Africa, a continent whose struggles seem to permananetly reside under most Americans’ radar. But nice wines, great food and a chance to provide a helping hand should appeal to most everyone.
The events are next Tuesday (April 1) at Neptune Italiana Cafe in Blaine, April 9 at Ursula’s Wine Bar & Cafe in White Bear Lake, April 23 at Beaujo’s Wine Bar & Bistro in Minneapolis, April 30 at Campiello in Eden Prairie, May 7 at Red Stag Supper Club in Minneapolis, May 14 at Gusto Wine Bar & Cafe in Hopkins, May 17 aboard “The Duchess” on the St. Croix River and May 21 at Ursula’s.
