Better late …

Finally made it to Sorella over the weekend, and have been kicking myself ever since for taking so long. I’m guessing that I had so missed the Liquor Depot – where great bargains made it worth dealing with the oft-frightful parking lot — that I had subconsciously avoided its successor.

What a cementhead I was. This is one swell wine store. And make no mistake, it is much more a wine store than its predecessor, which actually was one of the most underrated wine outlets in town. Sorella boasts a wide-ranging selection with some great, surprising choices from less renowned regions in all price ranges.

The layout is sophisticated, urbane even, a far cry from the old digs. Ditto for the staff, led by affable wine buyer Darrin Minehan. All in all, a great addition to a rapidly improving local wine-retail scene, plus it gives Washington Avenue two superb wine shops, with Sam’s  just over a mile to the north.

Now’s a great time to familiarize yourself with Sorella, as every wine in the store is marked down through May 10. And, yes, it does have a parking lot, semi-hidden off 11th Avenue. Not as conspicuous as the Depot’s, or as daunting.
