Apple-licious

My new favorite holiday arrives tomorrow, with an appropriate event to fete it.

Oct. 25 is St. Crispin’s Day, honoring the patron saint of cobblers (who knew?). And down at the Local, anyone who donates a pair of good shoes gets a free bottle of a tasty new product, Crispin Natural Hard Cider.

The event is a collaboration between an Irishman, ever-droll and -resourceful Local owner Kieran Folliard, and a South African, Joe Heron, the force behind the three ciders under the Crispin label: original, light and brut.

Heron, who lives in Minneapolis and earned his U.S. citizenship this summer, noticed that cider was really starting to catch on in Europe and thought, why not here in prime apple country? For now, Crispin ciders are made in California, but he hopes to eventually be producing them from Minnesota apples. They’re best served over ice and are quite food-friendly.

And by the way, the Local has some wonderful food, even though many consider it mostly a bar (and it’s none too shabby in that department).  It doesn’t call itself a gastropub, but if it doesn’t fit that bill, I’m not sure what would.

“The goal [Saturday] is for everyone to go out of here with no shoes at all,” said Folliard. You might wanna bringa couple of extra pairs of shoes, given the weather forecast and the tastiness of the Crispin ciders.
