Snowy Owl at airport

A Snowy Owl is being seen at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. It is very difficult to see, however, because it spends most of its time far from any accessible viewing point. The bird is a juvenile, as determined by the amount of black on its feathers. Snowy Owls make a perhaps annual appearance at the airport. Its flat terrain is familiar to birds from the Arctic tundra. The hunting has to be good, too. These photos were taken Thursday morning.

Wonderful photo of the Snowy Owl!

Is there a recommended spot to go near the airport to try to get a glimpse of the bird? Would you need a spotting scope?
Jim, I saw the small white snow owl flying very low to the ground last week while I was at the airport…I was near the Fed Ex bldg or where all the Fed Ex trucks are parked. I’m thinking it may have been last Sunday. I was amazed to see your blog about the owl shortly thereafter. Very cool!
Spectacular photo of the snowy owl on
top of a pole, Jim! If I were a rodent, I wouldn’t want to see those huge talons overhead.
When I have seen this wide gape in Snowies, it usually is followed by a pellet the size of a bratwurst, is this what happened here?
