Miller Time, Free Agency Time

New Timberwolf Mike Miller was introduced at Target Center today, six days after he was acquired from Memphis in what he calls a homecoming for a fellow who grew up four hours away in Mitchell, S.D.

Kevin McHale calls him the tipping point in last week’s big eight-player deal. Without his inclusion at the 11th hour, the deal never would have made.

Was his presence mandated because it gives the Wolves a career 40-percent three-point shooter who, along with Kevin Love and Randy Foye and Rashad McCants and their outside shooting, will spread the floor for Al Jefferson.

Or was it a cheap ploy to sell more tickets to South Dakotans.

“Could be that,” Miller said with a smile. “I know some people who are going to come to games now.”

Miller now gives the Wolves three Florida Gators: Fellow lanky swingman Corey Brewer and Chris Richard.

“If we keep getting Gators here, we’re going to win for sure,” he said.

Last time Miller came to Target Center, he scored 34 points in a Grizzlies’ victory in March.

Asked if the hometown fans can expect such a performance now every night out, Miller said, “If I could that, I would have been here a long time ago.”

Etc.

* General manager Jim Stack’s contract expired on Monday. McHale said the team is in the process of working out a new deal with Stack. “He’s going to be here,” McHale said.

* Wolves forward Ryan Gomes’ first child, a girl named Ryelle, was born last Wednesday. Now, the restricted free agent is awaiting a new contract, with the Wolves or elsewhere. Gomes’ agent said he doesn’t expect a deal will be reached with any team until what he calls “first tier” of free agents — Gilbert Arenas, Elton Brand, Baron Davis, etc. — sign.
“Numerous teams have called,” agent Bob Myers said. “The teams that have available cap space are very few. They all like him; it’s all about finding a number they like him at. Minnesota is committed to keeping him. I hope we can find a fair deal for both sides.”
