Summer league stuff

The Wolves still are four days away from gathering in Las Vegas with their summer-league team, but the Orlando games kicked off today with Michael Beasley and Derrick Rose opposing each other right now. Go to www.orlandomagic.com to see a web cast of the game in which Beasley is scoring at will and from just about anywhere and Mario Chalmers has spent most of the game in Rose’s shorts. Chalmers, of course, was the player the Wolves could have had, would have had, if they hadn’t dealt that second-round pick to the Heat for a couple million bucks and two second-round draft picks next summer.

Wednesday is the first day NBA teams can sign free agents, but the Wolves might not make much immediate news. Ryan Gomes’ agent said today he still expects negotiations with the Wolves and other teams to stretch into next week while teams wait for the bigger name free agents — Elton Brand, Corey Maggette, etc. — to reach agreements. Same could happen with Telfair and Craig Smith. The delays might mean there’s not going to be much extra money floating out there for those less notable free agents.

Gomes’ agent, Bob Myers, said accepting the Wolves’ one-year qualifying offer is a viable option if Gomes doesn’t receive an attractive offer sheet.
