Brewer out for the season

Posted on December 1st, 2008 – 11:29 AM
By Jerry Zgoda

Corey Brewer tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the second half of Saturday’s loss to Denver and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

A medical imagining test of Brewer’s knee on Monday morning revealed the tear and Wolves coach Randy Wittman and the team got the news in Charlotte on the way to the arena for this morning’s shootaround.

Brewer fell twice in the second half Saturday. The first time, he went back into the team’s locker room briefly but returned to play before he fell again.

“I don’t know when it was but I could gather he got hurt on the first one because he asked to come out and Corey never asks to come out,” Wittman said. “He’s never asked me out of a game before in a year and a half. I thought Corey was starting to fall into understanding how to play, playing with some good confidence. He gives us great energy off the bench. We’re going to miss that.”

Brewer’s absence leaves the Wolves without their best individual defender.

“It hurts obviously,” Wittman said. “That’s what he has been providing. It hurts. But I’ve got confidence that we’ve got guys who can pick up those minutes in a quality way. That’s why you always tell players to be ready because you don’t know. I think we’ve got guys who can step up and provide that. Now they’re going to have the opportunity to do that.”

Brewer’s injury — surgery won’t be done until the swelling subsides in his knee — means more time for Rodney Carney, more time for Rashad McCants (who’s played just 16 minutes in the last three games mainly because he continues to jack up threes), more time for Randy Foye at the 2 and Mike Miller at the 3.

“Opportunities, oppportunities,” Wittman said. “We could go small. Kevin Ollie has had some good minutes before his (calf) injury. We could move Randy over and Mike down. We could play Rodney and Rashad together. We could do a number of different things there.”

Ryan Gomes called the news “a big blow to him and a big blow to our team. That’s a tough loss for us. He was giving us a lot of energy. He makes plays that really don’t showup too much in the stats, but he’s in the right place at the right time. He’s one of our best defenders because he can guard a lot of different guys at a lot of different positions.

“But we’ve got 15 guys on this team so we have to have someone fill that void. We have to become much better defensively as a team now because he could make those plays and guard gys one on one. Now it goes into soemone else’s hands.”

UPDATE: Regarding a question on this thread where somebody asked about a Rashad McCants-to-Charlotte trade: Well, I don’t think there’s any question they’d trade him if they could get something of value — he’s played like 10 minutes in the last three games since coming back from those back spasms and Wittman said today he’ll play more when he stops throwing up indiscriminant threes, getting in careless foul trouble and starts protecting the ball better — but I can’t see the Bobcats wanting another wing player with such poor shot-selection taste.

They’ve already got Jason Richardson and Gerald Wallace out there and need another post player and a wing defender who’ll drive to the basket. Brewer would make more sense in to-Charlotte talk, but that’s a moot point now. And the Wolves don’t have good post players to spare, certainly not what it would take to get a Wallace in a package deal. I think any thought that Charlotte would want a guy like McCants just because he went to UNC is silly.

I am sorry to hear this on Brewer’s knee. I just hope that his surgery goes well, his rehab goes well, and he will be back here to be a star next year when we have a new coach, and a new GM… and can start a winning vibe around here.

Jerry, have you heard anything about McCants possibly being dealt to Charlotte?

Roberto El Doucho says:

December 1st, 2008 at 11:58 am

This is a serious blow to the wolves championship drive. I’m afraid without Brewer, they may not make it to the finals. Oh, and by the way, this crack I’m smoking is really good.

McHale will convince the senile old goat Taylor, that “the injuries killed our chances.”

Do us all a favor, and move this team far, far, away. Brutal.

Wow :( he was showing signs of stardom too

I wish him all the best; McCants came back from a major injury, so can he.

Now we can see what Carney can really do

About the trade to Charlotte - are we paying them to take him? if we get ANYTHING out of that deal its a plus

Well I for one am sorry to hear this. Brewer alone among all the Wolves players getting floor burn understood defense.

Now we have to hope that the geniuses who couldn’t get Rashad to play team ball can reeducate Carney. Good luck with that.

James says:

December 1st, 2008 at 12:52 pm

Brewer was starting to come on Offensively, this is only his 2nd year.
At least he gave this team some defense and especially some athlentisism which this team clearly lacks.

Brian says:

December 1st, 2008 at 12:53 pm

You can’t compare Love to Mayo straight up. First of all, show the shooting percentage for Mayo. He has had a few games where he was about 30% shooting. Second, he has nobody else on his team to score so they will let him play 35-40 minutes and shoot whenever he wants.

Love will be good for what he is meant to be, a low post player who can get boards and can score if needed. He isn’t going to be a 25ppg player.

Idiots comparing Love to Mayo straight up either have no clue how basketball works or are just trying to show a point without really comparing them.

Sean says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:07 pm

Kevin Love was picked with the #5 pick. He’s not supposed to be a role player — he’s supposed to be a key contributor.

It’s too early to say the deal is a bust or not. But let’s not change the expectations for Love after the fact. He’s supposed to be a very good player.

jimmy bee says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:11 pm

Ben how is our 2nd rounder Craig Smith doing as opposed to our 1st rounder Brewer and oh yeah how is our 2nd rounder now Chalmer doing in comparison to our 1st rounder Brewer. I just think that his stats don’t match up with other first rounders of years past. How is Brewer doing in comparison to the other 1st rounders selected the same year as Brewer?

Bryan says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:21 pm

Ok, first of all, McHale specifically said on draft day that, had we known the Love trade was going to happen, we wouldn’t have traded Chalmers. You guys need to let it go.

Second, Brewer’s contributions can’t be measured by statistics. That’s like asking who’s doing better, Craig Smith or Shane Battier. Obviously Brewer is still several steps away from reaching Battier’s level, but you get the idea.

Best wishes to Corey. He’s one of my favorite players, hopefully this is just a minor setback in what will be a long and successful career.

BC Beneke says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:25 pm

Jama - I agree with you. Usually I am Mr. Negative, and these guys are just brutal.

Corey’s a nice guy, and he has shown signs of improvement as an offensive player, and is our best defensive player.

The only good things that I see that are truly good about this is that he is going to have to do a lot of work to rehab his leg, and one of the things that he is picked on for his his pencil thin legs… The other is that he won’t be there to let Kevin McHale and Randy Wittman make him worse.

BC.Beneke says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:27 pm

Jerry, why is it that after every 4th post on here my information is gone?

BC.Beneke says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:31 pm

Bryan,

I promise I won’t complain much if at all about Chalmers because I agree with McHale on that one. That was not his mistake, or his fault.

However, I want him roasted over the flames of hell for the mistakes he is responsible for. I think that’s fair considering being a Wolves fan is a lot like living on the rim of Hell!

jimmy bee says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:38 pm

and one of the things that he is picked on for are his pencil thin legs

Or his chicklet teeth

BC imagine a team with Roy, Chalmers and Mayo as a core for the nucleus. I grew up a Laker fan and this is like I am given a worse team to view then the Clippers

Bryan says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:38 pm

I definitely agree with that. We need sweeping management changes, starting with McHale being fired.

James says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:41 pm

I don’t buy what McHale said about the trading Chalmer if he had knew……

So we would have had Foye PG and Mayo SG and Jaric and Chalmers as back-ups and we would not have had to sign Telfair as a Free Agent.
McHale got money for Chalmers because they lost money last year and will again this year because the team he put on the floor don’t cut it.
McFail was just covering himself again.
Chalmers will be a very good starting PG in this league.

DE says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:41 pm

Sorry to hear that about Brewer. The kid is fun to watch out there. We must have some Kobe/Lebron/Wade players posting here if they can point to a professional basketball player and point out all his millions of faults as a player. Smoke break’s over guys, we need more french fries…

sammyford says:

jimmy bee says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:48 pm

James we wouldn’t of had Foye in that lineup it would have been Roy. McFail is smarter then all of us though. Next year he will wait again till we are all asleep and trade away the Wolves #1 draft pick for Herschell Walker and a bag of magic beans that smell an awful lot like rabit sh!t

James says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:51 pm

jimmy bee,

My comment had nothing to do for that idiot mistake of Roy.
I was just working with what we had when he traded the pick last year

Bryan says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:52 pm

James, you came at it backwards. McHale said if we had known the Love trade WAS going to go through. The lineup you listed was assuming we had kept Mayo, not traded him away.

If we had known we’d get Love, then we’d have kept Mario and then had Chalmers, Foye and Telfair.

Also, you guys are overrating Chalmers anyway. He was barely a starting point guard at the college level…his scoring was mediocre and his assist numbers were bad. He barely averaged over 4apg at Kansas. Ya, he looks good now, but honestly, everyone you stick in the backcourt next to Wade looks good. Damon Jones looked like an all star with the Heat….when’s the last time you heard his name?

jimmy bee says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:57 pm

James sorry about that, I get it. Mcfail will get it right this year though. I have a feeling at 1:30 in the morning after a few coctails he will do a package deal like no one else’s business.

sammyford says:

December 1st, 2008 at 1:58 pm

Bryan,
Do you actually believe McHale when he opens his mouth? He has to cover his ass no matter what. Of coarse he is going to tell us he would have kept Mario if he would have known the Love trade was going to happen. What, does nobody in the MN organization communicate with eachother during the draft. C’mon…you can’t be that gullible.

jimmy bee says:

December 1st, 2008 at 2:01 pm

BC Beneke. This package deal coming at 1:30 in the A.M. next draft will make you proud to be a T-Wolves supporter.

James says:

December 1st, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Bryan,

I am saying all things as they were when He drafted Chalmers and then traded him made no sense. Why was it ok to Trade Chalmer before the trade and not after. I don’t by his logic or do I believe McHale is being truthful. I still say he did it for money and not the good of the team.

BC.Beneke says:

December 1st, 2008 at 2:09 pm

Jimmybee…

I grew up watching Magic, Worthy, Kareem, and and Byron Scott as well. I know that this team is inferior to that… but so is 99.5% of every team that has ever played the game.

Looking at all the players we could have had, should have had, had and traded away, cut, let go… blah blah blah… it all comes down to a few simple truths.

Glen Taylor is bucking for the Al Davis of the NBA

Kevin McHale is the George Bush Jr of the NBA for failure, and ineptitude and really can’t do a god damned thing right

Randy Wittman is a lousy coach whose coaching record speaks for itself, and when that stops I will be happy to speak for the rest of it. He is the worst thing to happen to this team since Ricky Cancer Davis! He’s worthless and he makes the team worse with every game he coaches!

Tim says:

December 1st, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Sorry about the injury…the biggest injury is keeping McHale…a reason he was the best 6th man is that he never had to make a real decision when it counted…just react. Not a a good trait for the head man!

jimmy bee says:

December 1st, 2008 at 2:14 pm

BC Beneke. Someday’s I feel like McFail would have drafted Magic and traded him away for Kurt Rambis.

BC - How can you say Glen Taylor is worse than Donald Sterling or Clay Bennett ? Seriously…how ?

BC.Beneke says:

December 1st, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Swan Dizzle -

Quite Easily. McHale should have been fired right after the Joe Smith illegal signing. McHale should have been fired after drafting Ndi Ebi, and any freaking day of the week every day since that event would have been a good day to fire McHale.

Firing Flip instead of McHale, bringing in Randy Wittless…

Changing the Wolves roster by 50% every year for the last 4 years rather than putting the responsibility on the coaches and the management he keeps blaming the players.

Glen Taylor is a lousy owner, and he can go back to his slave labor jobs in Mankato!

jseverson says:

December 1st, 2008 at 3:09 pm

It’s too bad about Corey. You never like to see anyone sustain this kind of injury. Get well Corey.

BC.Beneke says:

December 1st, 2008 at 3:10 pm

Glen Taylor refused to fire McHale when they found out that he could not take this team to the next level. 4 years into the playoffs 1 and done seasons McHale should have been out, and someone should have been brought in to try and take it to that next level.

All the mistakes that McHale has made are on Taylor for not doing his job as the owner.

Glen may be a wonderful guy… I could care less. I am a basketball fan, and I want to see a team that belongs on an NBA court, and anything to do with Randy Wittman and Kevin McHale belongs in the bottom of a sewer not on an NBA court.

Sean says:

December 1st, 2008 at 3:14 pm

What’s the rationale for saying Clay Bennett is worse than Glen Taylor?

The Thunder and the Wolves are about the same on the court right now — a few promising young players with lots of draft picks and lots of cap space looming.

Bennett doesn’t have nearly 15 years of failure on his record yet.

1. McFail had a wife or girl friend that had on a matching sweater sitting next to him. That scared me a bit. 2 dark grey sweaters sitting next to each other.

2. Shaq isone huge guy but he has skinny little bird legs. he is very top heavy

Bryan says:

December 1st, 2008 at 3:38 pm

C’mon, I obviously don’t believe everything McHale says. I’ve been one of his fiercest critics, putting almost all of the blame for our problems on his shoulders when everyone else is blaming Wittman.

I’m just saying that what he said makes sense. If he thought we were keeping Mayo, then there would have been no need for Chalmers.

Also, in case you all missed it, he said all this ON DRAFT NIGHT BEFORE CHALMERS PLAYED A SINGLE GAME. Why would be be trying to “cover his ass” when Chalmers hadn’t even done anything yet?

C’mon. Think a little guys.

Pointless says:

December 1st, 2008 at 3:42 pm

“First of all, show the shooting percentage for Mayo.”

46.4%

“Second, he has nobody else on his team to score so they will let him play 35-40 minutes and shoot whenever he wants.”

You think Rudy Gay cant score? Imagine being able to score 21.9 ppg shooting 46.4% while being constantly double teamed, being that no one else on your squad can score according to you. Mayo is better than love hands down every single time.

ManoLive says:

Hey El Doucho,Wishing this team would move is about as stupid a comment as your moniker suggests. Being a part of the NBA is a privilege, not a right. It took us over 30 years to get a franchise after they left the first time. Oklahoma City consistently sells out, with over 19,000 fans to watch a one win team. You’re no fan. Quit watching the team if you don’t like them. SUre we have the worst management in NBA history, but at least we got a team, something a LOT of cities can’t say. Sean, BC & Pointless:

Clay Bennett completely sandbagged and robbed a city of a their team. This is Norm Green territory, but probably even worse than Norm considering Clay lied to the whole city about trying to keep the team.

Donald Sterling was / is one of the cheapest owners ever and has put the worst teams on the court more consistently than anyone else due to not spending money on talent.

I can see Taylor as 3rd worst though. But definitely not worse than the above mentioned…

Bryan says:

You don’t get it James. He traded Chalmers before he traded Mayo. Why would we have needed Foye, Telfair, Mayo, Chalmers? If he had known Mayo wouldn’t be on that list by the end of the night he would have kept Chalmers. There’s nothing unreasonable about that. He was going on what the current situation was, and at the time, it looked like Mayo was staying here, making Chalmers unnecessary.

And again, Mario isn’t all that great anyway.

Sean says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:03 pm

It was clear from the start that Bennett intended to move the team, and the folks in Seattle did nothing to stop it. No local ownership stepped up to buy the team from Howard Schultz. Key Arena was a dump and there was no plan to fix it or replace it. Anyone who was surprised by the move wasn’t paying close attention.

Chris says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Sorry for Brewer, but yeah for more Carney before we watch him go play great for a better team next year. Mayo will be a productive scorer for years and unfortunately if we want to win, we can’t have Jefferson and Love playing toegether, this means they should never start both and Love wont start. Foye, McCants, Brewer, Ebi, Love, not a great track record recently or ever. Too early for Love but does anyone think he has a chance to be a top 20 player in the league.

But why trade the second-round pick for the nothing they got in return for it? There were any number of other players who might have contributed that they could have taken. If they thought they were set at the point, they could have taken

last line should read:
If they thought they were set at the point, they could have taken somebody else.

Go ahead and move. Im not going to be held hostage by a professional sports franchise.

Now if the Twins left, that would be another story all together. MLB is as central to the American way of life as capitalism.

The NBA is a second tier pro league. Go ahead and take the Wolves someplace elese. Life will go on.

James says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:10 pm

Bryan you don’t get it.
Mayo is a SHOOTING GUARD.
Telfair was a Free Agent not under contract during the draft.
That leaves Foye as the PG and Chalmers as his back up.

ryan says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:12 pm

get rid of this franchise right now, move em to mexico city or something. take mc-pale with them!

sammyford says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:14 pm

Mchale is covering his ass from the backlash that he was going to create by making the moves that he did. No, we don’t know how things will turn out, and neither does he. But we all have our opinion on draft day as to who we would like to see on our team and that usually doesn’t match with McHale’s thinking. Yes he get’s paid to do it and our (my) opinion means nothing to anyone, but from the deals he’s made in the past, his opinion is usually wrong. That’s what he is trying to avoid. More criticism.

Pointless says:

On the subject of Chalmers….

WHO CARES?????!!!!

Its not like the Wolves’ biggest problem is lack of a quality back up PG.

jama says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Chalmers would be the Wolves starting PG right now had they not traded him.

jama says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Bryan

I think the main complaint about trading Chalmers was that the Wolves gave up an early 2nd round pick for two extremely late 2nd round picks that have no value at all. You could insert any different number of players instead of Chalmers and that was still a horrible trade. The fact that Chalmers would be a good fit for the Wolves just makes it that much worse.

James says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:21 pm

Back up PG how about Starting PG.
McHale always tries to put a square peg in a circle. Foye is not a true PG.

Growing up in LA liking the Laker’s I didn’t like McFail when he was with the Celtics and I don’t like him now

Pointless says:

James and Jama,

So your point is that McHale traded away our starting PG in Chalmers? You know how STUPID that sounds? If Chalmers is our starting PG, we STILL suck.

At this point this whole organization is Effed up to the point the CIA must be involved. Nothing gets this Effed up without a conspiracy and the CIA.

Where is Olie Stone? He needs to do a movie on this one.

Carney stinks. It takes 18 months post surgery to recover for Brewer. Opportunities. Opportunities is not strategy unless you’re a loser.

James says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:47 pm

I am saying he traded away a potential PG for absolutely nothing in return.
Again McHale showed his ignorance in thinking that at the time of the draft Mayo, Foye and Jaric, are Point Guards when in fact they are Shooting Guards.
Too may PG’s in Foye, Mayo, Jaric so go ahead and Trade Chalmers for notta….

Dumb

18 months for an ACL? Maybe if you’re doing the surgery with a spoon.

Captain America says:

McCants is a chucker. A rim rocker. A flash and dash. And, alas, a near future door-to-door life insurance sales guy.

“Dumb”

Its about 197th on a list of 200 dumb things. Get some prespective. Id put the ugly uniforms higher on the list.

James says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:50 pm

I don’t even mind the Trade for Love, Miller, Collins Cardinal, because we got rid of Jaric, Walker and Buckner.

It involved a lot more than just Mayo/Love

But Chalmers was just given away.

James says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:52 pm

At least we got something tangible in uniforms….

Captain America says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Pointless (you are) check history on past ACL surgery patients. They get on the floor within 12 months and it takes another 6 to fully recover.

Pointless says:

December 1st, 2008 at 4:53 pm

“But Chalmers was just given away.”

Do you know how much loose change I cant account for? You should be more pissed off that Danny Granger isnt a Wolf and McCants is. Or that Rudy Gay isnt a Wolf and Foye is.

Captain America says:

Funny, no one pining for Marko Jaric? Ricky Buckets? Twinkle Toes Walker?

Exactly, hes on the floor to start the year. No doubt about it.

So if your point is he is going to go from 6pts 3rbs and less than a steal to 3pts 1.5 rbs and no steals, I guess you got me there.

My son tore his right knee ACL and had surgery at TRIA on 12/4/08. He is a senior in high school and will miss out on his senior year of sports. He is doing well in his PT and hopes to return to playing sports in college. Good Luck Corey with your rehab.
