Wolves 94, Grizzlies 87

Randy Foye: Sparkplug, long range shooter, driver to the hoop, shot blocker.
Wait. Shot blocker?
Yup - Foye did it all here in Memphis tonight, using his slick shooting styles and his hops to help Minnesota win for the third time in a row, and the fourth time in the past five games.
I’ve seen Kevin McHale get animated a few times since he took over as coach a month ago. But, man was he amped after Foye’s block on O.J. Mayo led to Ryan Gomes’ layup late in the game. The play all but sealed tonight’s win.
“Now that’s a block! Now that’s a block!” McHale screamed. Later, McHale called the play “ridiculous.” Of course, he meant it in a good way.
(Want more McHale quotes? His advice to one ref tonight, hoping it would get relayed to the guy on the other side: “Tell him to tone it down a bit both ways; nobody came here to watch him.” Ha!)
One aspect of tonight’s game that did not get into the story but I really want to address is the team’s physical play. Everyone seemed to have it; but how about Brian Cardinal? Did you see the play after he made the bad pass early in the second quarter? Mayo saved Cardinal’s poor pass from going out of bounds by flipping it to Hakim Warrick. But before Warrick could get the ball, Cardinal dove in and the two wrestled to the ground. A jump ball ensued, and the Wolves gained possession.
Cardinal also showed some grit by falling over backwards for a rebound (or maybe it was a blocked shot …) in the fourth.
Wolves PR folks give me grief because I think I’m the only person in town who has requested Cardinal for an interview (I think I’m up to four or five now). But if he plays like this, he might be finding tape recorders near by more often.
Finally - Mike Miller is fine. Yes he came down awkward on that right ankle again. But it was just tweaked, and evidenced by his 28 minutes tonight he’ll be good to go for tomorrow against the Thunder. But what a scare, eh? The last thing this team needs is another injury.
OK - I’m out for tonight. I fly back to the Twin Cities tomorrow and will be heading straight to Target Center for more action.
I wonder if it’s still raining outside??? Time to find out.
BYE!
Hello from Seattle Memphis. The weather here has not changed since my flight landed yesterday afternoon: Cold, rainy and fog. I braved the rain last night in search of dinner (and some fine live music) and today heading to FedEx Forum for the shootaround. But tonight, I took the trolley. Hey, it’s only a buck. To stay dry, why not?
If you think folks in the Twin Cities are crazy about the weather, mercy you should see how they treat a good old fashioned rain storm here just north of Mississippi. During the Fiesta Bowl last night, the local TV folks kept reminding viewers that the temperature was “close to 32 degrees” and that travel should cease until morning. Now, I’m all for safety. No one should drive in a glare-ice storm. But this was not. The CONSTANT crawl on the bottom of the screen was just a tick over the top for some cold rain. At least for a lifelong Midwesterner like myself. Back home, we only lead newscasts with the weather when there’s an inch of snow at rush hour
OK - on to some basketball. Coach Kevin McHale today said Randy Foye and Sebastian Telfair will see plenty of time at the guard positions while Kevin Ollie is out.
“Hopefully we can begin to get more of a multi-flow offense where different guys are handling the ball,” McHale said. “There’s no ‘they’re guards; they’re forwards.’ They’re basketball players. They’re going to go play basketball.”
Both Foye and Telfair this morning said they’re ready for whatever McHale asks them to do. Telfair, though, did say he would rather play with the ball in his hands than off the ball.
“It’s, again, whatever’s best for the team,” McHale said in response. “Bassy will have the ball some. But it will be in his hands, then out of his hands. Hopefully getting everybody involved.”
Finally, in news that should shock no one but is kind of a head-scratcher when you think about it, it’s Elvis Night here at FedEx Forum. Security guards, ushers and game staff are all wearing big Elvis-esque sunglasses. It’s an interesting sight. However - in Memphis, isn’t every night Elvis night? I say yes, simply based on the music I’ve sampled so far.
Tip-off in an hour. Enjoy the game!

Jerry, do the Wolves have any interest in signing Shaun Livingston?
I do like watching mayo play though, I have been a Laker fan since I was 3 watching Magic, and Mayo looks a lot like Kobe coming out of Lower Merion High School. Kobe is about 2 inches taller but their build and style of play are similar. Mayo needs to strengthen his defense but he is a rookie and guarding the opposing sg every night in the NBA is no easy task. Mayo is already a better jump shooter than Kobe was in his 2nd year.
I lived in arkansas for a year and it is a totally different world down there when it comes to winter weather. Luckily the year I was there it was a mild and dry winter.
Kobe was 18 during his rookie year … Mayo is 21 in his rookie year
Have to hang on and win this won Wolves! Let’s do this!
What happened to Rashad’s good Monday practice?
Are the Wolves trying to ruin their lottery chances?
Just kidding, as I do like to see them win, and I am glad that they got to 9 wins so they can’t beat the fewest wins record.
I meant Mayo is ahead in his first year of Kobe in his 2nd year. I’m not saying he is kobe or going to be, but I said there are a lot of similarities at that point in their careers.
Victory!!!

Great Win! 2-0 vs Memphis
McCants not playing is the number one reason for our win streak. He play’s like a combination of a 12 year old and one without a conscious. Lets find another player who could use a change of scenery and get rid of this experiment.

Man you are a clever jackass. Knock it off…
Yes Brian, there were so few fans in the stands that one could hear McHale clearly throughout most of the game. His comment to the ref that you quote was a good one.
I’m afraid that I’m actually starting to like McHale as a coach. If he keeps this up he may turn around and become beloved once again by fair weather Minnesota fans.
On suggestion for the new coach:
Work on Kevin Love’s acceleration. He didn’t look obnoxiously slow moving up and down the court once he got up to speed, but he looked dreadfully slow on his stops, starts and changes in direction. If he can learn to speed up his quickness in that aspect he won’t get beat up and down the floor so badly and so often.
Other than that they looked pretty good. Foye was playing with high confidence and Telfair even played some good defense at times. The team is playing at a high level right now and it’s fun to see.
Oh ya 4 in a row coming tonight ! McHale rules, Love rules and Mayo stinks.
Another nice win last night…I’m starting to change my opinion about McHale…Telfair, Foye and Smith were my three stars of the game….
With tons of cap space soon available and lots of draft picks, the Wolves could do themselves a favor and trade for a ‘quiet’ midwestern star player in the mold of Devin Harris.
And that player is Caron Butler. The Wizards might be going to the rebuilding path and Butler is from Racine, WI - and more importantly is a great athlete and All Star type player if he played in a bigger market. He is a 20-5-5 guy, playing the 3 position.
W
The Wolves aren’t going to have cap space until the 2010 season. By then Butler is going to be a declining veteran with a bloated contract.
Isn’t 2010 - next year?
Hahaha! I see your point though Jama. I do think NBA players last a little longer in their prime than NFL players though. I think Butler will turn 30 sometime in the 2010 season. Hopefully by then we will be in a position to make a playoff push.
I am suprised we do not see more speculation regarding Livingston… Given the interest that we supposedly had in october, I would think that he would be ripe for picking now… Does anyone know how that would impact our cap space? Do we have any cap space?
We don’t have cap space. If we wanted to sign Livingston, we could sign him at the minimum, or use one of our two salary cap exceptions. However, we would first have to clear a roster spot by getting rid of a player.
No Livingston ! Booooooooooooo ! Don’t take him !
