Jefferson has ACL tear; surgery soon

This is all over our startribune.com site already. But in case you somehow missed it, Wolves star Al Jefferson is likely gone for the season with a torn ACL in his right knee. An MRI this morning revealed the tear. Coach Kevin McHale said just like Corey Brewer earlier this season, it was pretty obvious. Jefferson should have surgery in the next week to 10 days. From there, it’s a long road back.
We’ll have full coverage in tomorrow’s paper, including team reaction.
Practice today, we’re told, was pretty quiet. As usual, the media didn’t get to see much. What I can tell you is Jason Collins, Mark Madsen and Calvin Booth were pretty active in the portion we were allowed in for. Better get used to those names. I think you’ll be seeing a lot of them.
Kevin Love, the starting power forward the past three games with Craig Smith (cracked ribs) out, has been told to expect to play 35+ minutes from now on.
Love, 20, called the 24-year-old Jefferson a “mentor.” But even without their No. 1 man on and off the court, the show must go on.
“We’ll call Al, see how he’s doing,” Love said. “But tomorrow [against Toronto] we have to lace ‘em up just like he was there with us.”
