Kahn new president of basketball operations: What it means

After talking with multiple sources this morning, here’s what I know:

* David Kahn will be announced tomorrow as the team’s president of basketball operations — a new title that in language is one step up from Kevin McHale’s vice president of basketbll operations.

* He will arrive with no stipulations as to who — including Kevin McHale and Fred Hoiberg — he does or doesn’t keep from the current front-office staff and will use the next five weeks before the draft to evaluate Hoiberg, Jim Stack, Rob Babcock, etc. UPDATE: To clarify, Kahn will rely on that entire staff in draft preparations because they’ve been doing the work on it all season and, really, he has no other choice at this point. He’ll have the final call, of course. You can’t put together a whole new department on the fly with just five weeks remaining. So he’ll rely on them while at the same time, I’m sure, forming opinions as to who he wants on his staff once the draft is over and July arrives.

* Don’t expect any decisions on what the new basketball staff will look like until July. I have told that both McHale and Hoiberg, in particular, have been promised nothing.

* I think Kahn and McHale have talked, but sounds like they will talk further next week. I think Kahn will give him a courtesy interview and perhaps the two will really hit it off, but I fully expect a coaching search to commence in the next week or two.

* Obviously the draft is the first priority, but expect Kahn to put a big emphasis on pro scouting quickly with the intention of using the cap space and extra picks the team has acquired to try to find a big piece to this puzzle from another team, perhaps one looking to dump a big salary.
