David Kahn and Kevin McHale are expected to meet today to discuss the Wolves’ coaching job, but Kahn said he doesn’t expect a decision on the matter soon, like sometime yet this week.

That could change, of course, if McHale says thanks, but no thanks at the meeting’s end and walk out into the rest of his life.

Kahn said the two might need multiple meetings to determine the team’s future course.

I asked Kahn on Friday why the new guy wouldn’t be concerned with having McHale’s long shadow remain in an organization that he’s trying to remake anew and if he wouldn’t worry that McHale is used to picking up the phone and calling owner Glen Taylor anytime he wanst something done.

“Kevin and Glen have a relationship that’s lasted 17 years,” Kahn said. “I think it’s wonderful. I don’t have any worries. That won’t even be part of the decision-making process. I’m not so insecure that I don’t think people should be allowed to voice their opinions if they’re different from mine.

“My relationship with Glen frankly starts today. I know what my authority is. I know I’m the decisionmaker. Kevin and I, if we do this, hopefully we’ll have a relationship that the person he calls is me.”

Whatever happens, Kahn vows the situation will be handled carefully.

“Kevin has a long history here and a relationship with the owner that I respect and trust,” Kahn said.”And I get that. Kevin has been here for 14 years and he’s Kevin McHale and I will not hurt Kevin McHale. I will not. We will make certain whatever is decided, that it’s done sensitively and the right way.”

Kahn said he has no list — mental or otherwise — of coaching candidates to replace McHale at this point.

“I do not, just like I don’t with the rest of the staff,” Kahn said. “I have no cronies or preconceived people. I’ve spoken with nobody. My task right now is to figure out along with Kevin how we proceed for next season. At that point, when that decision is made, then it’ll be time to put together those lists. For now, absolutely not.”

Kahn prehaps doesn’t have enough of a pulse on his new town yet to know the best thing he could do now to help ensure they build that statue of him outside Target Center is find a new, fresh face to coach. The remaining Timberwolves fans would have a parade — if there’s enough of them — if Kahn or McHale announce the Kevin McHale Era is over.
