What was that sound? Rubio, Flynn are your newest Wolves

Posted on June 25th, 2009 – 7:13 PM
By Jerry Zgoda

It was an eruption inside Target Center at the fan party when David Stern called Ricky Rubio’s name out for the Wolves.

You sure didn’t hear that often last winter.

It took about a second for that “Ole, ole, ole” soccer chant to resonate through NBA City.

Minutes later, the Wolves took Jonny Flynn of Syracuse next.

Two point guards?

What’s up with that?

Trade?

Nope, a Wolves spokesman rushed from upstairs right after the Flynn pick was made to tell us, promise us, swear they’re NOT trading either one.

Kahn is in the war room telling agents calling in wondering what the… that they intend to play those two together like the Pistons did Dumars and Isiah or the Celtics did Dennis Johnson and Danny Ainge.

Kevin Love just tweeted, “These guys are going to love my outlets.”

There will be a trade. Let’s see what the Knicks do.

Matty says:

June 25th, 2009 at 7:20 pm

That might just be interesting to keep them both. Especially given the hand check rules. Watch out.

The Wolves might be the next trend setter in the league. . .

Satch Sanders says:

June 25th, 2009 at 7:20 pm

Some “experts” said the Wolves would make two trades. Right now I’d say one is to leverage the point guard glut. The second will be to move up from 18. The night is still young.

Marty McFly says:

June 25th, 2009 at 7:21 pm

Relax, I see Rubio at the 2 as well. Nothing wrong with having two gifted, dynamic ballhandlers on the court. Flynn oozes leadership.

They can’t come out and say “yeah we’re trading Flynn” that’s not how this works.

I’m simply stunned. But waiting for a trade. I expect the Wolves to win about 10 games next year if this stands.

Is there any guarantee Rubio is willing to come here? What kind of message does it send to Rubio to pick another point guard?

You knew the old Wolves were starting to emerge today when Kahn basically said that Kevin Love was untradeable.

Kahn says Rubio may play in Spain next season because of buyout.

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 7:24 pm

McFly… Rubio a 2-guard? C’mon. You’re looking at his height and not even remotely looking at his game.

That’s like saying that Craig Smith can play 2-guard because he’s 6-6.

ChrisH says:

What good team plays 2 pg’s heavy minutes?

Forge says:

They think Rubio might not come over due to the contract. Flynn is insurance. Kahn says they are keeping both.

Satch Sanders says:

One of those picks were made for someone else. This isn’t the final outcome.

Swan Dizzle says:

Flynn

That is a fast team.

wtftw says:

I have a bad feeling… they’ll usually end up trading their better player for a worse one… It’ll be Roy-Foye debacle all over again. Taylor won’t pay for all 4 picks. He’d prefer to sell them instead of getting better trade values.

Very Wolves-like to take the star player and trade him.. I’m gonna be bummed when it happens.

Foo says:

Maybe we’ll draft Eric Maynor at No. 18 and Darren Collison at No. 28.

fatassets says:

Why take a backup plan at 6? You’re not playing for next year anyway so we just have 2 pg’s in 2 years when Rubio comes over.

I’m liking this outcome more and more. Before the draft the Wolves were in the position of beeing fleeced in order to get the players they wanted.

Now, the Wolves are in position to fleece someone else if they decide they want to do so. This is looking good to me so far.

On the other hand, I’m very excited to watch Flynn in a Wolves uniform. He’s dynamite.

The more I think about it, the more okay I’d be with keeping them both. It’s a really confusing move, but who’s not intrigued? They’re both really talented, they both can handle the ball, and Rubio can pass it and Flynn can take it to the whole.

Who honestly isn’t a little intrigued by a Rubio-Flynn backcourt? They both can play some defense, and has any team ever even tried something like this?

Mike B. says:

A better trade would have been to move up and take Evans or Harden…and you got neither! Rubio is the next Darko and Flynn is a clone of Telfair. GOOD GRIEF!!!! We’re doomed to another five years of McHale like ineptness in the front office! I suppose Cotton Fitzsimmons will be named the next coach, too! Even being Clippers fan is better than this.

Kahn is brilliant. The only risk in the draft was to have Rubio fall to him with no assurity he will sign - not to mention they haven’t worked him out. So Kahn thinks outside the box realizing there is a way to get the most value for his picks and not risk making an error with a hasty decision In effect he gets an “option” on the Rubio pick.

This allows time to figure out what will be the best way to maximize the value on the two picks he had. Rubio now comes in and while the Wolves negotiate AND evaluate they still have a great point guard (no risk with
Flynn) and a chance to decide how to use the value they just won. Lots of time to figure out what to do and lots of ways to find the best value for the opportunity now in hand. Plus the new coach will get some input.

David Kahn is too shrewd. His move guarantees “getting it right”… to use his phrase. Pretty amazing for a guy who started out a sports writer. Wow! … and more to come

Matty says:

June 25th, 2009 at 7:54 pm

Tom D - Flynn can hold his own as a jump shooter and Rubio has the potential to improve, IMO, because he doesn’t have major mechanical issues like Evans does, for example.

I still think they might do a trade, but I’m intrigued by the idea of rolling with them both.

East Coast twins fan says:

June 25th, 2009 at 7:56 pm

Rubio is worth the risk of a bust - which is not much of a risk. He was not intimidated playing Chris Paul as a 17 year old in a GOLD medal game. He’s been playing with MEN since he was 14. Great High schoolers and great college players play in that league in Europe and get schooled and warm benches.

Can we please refrain from the Rubio can’t defend or he will be dominated night in and night out by Kobe talk (A lot of players are dominated by Kobe) plus we have brewer for some reason.

Think of it this way - How are teams going to defend Flynn and Rubio in a couple years…At least we wouldn’t be like every other team.

fiveanddime says:

June 25th, 2009 at 7:58 pm

I don’t question taking two PGs in this draft, since they are young, and maybe not ready to start anyway. But not with the 5 and 6. I don’t think there is much separation between Flynn and several other PGs who would be available later. The bigger issue is that they need a veteran PG to bring either of these guys along, now you’re carrying 3 or 4 PGs. They’ve got to be dealing, and I don’t know how much value these guys have in a deep PG draft. Heck, look at the guys still on the board.

MacTheKnife says:

Typical draft — Jrue Holiday off the board one pick before us.

Powerslave77 says:

Trading with the Knicks is a horrible idea. The only asset they have of any value to this team is Chandler. It would have made sense before they drafted to take Chandler + 8th for Rubio, but now that they drafted Hill, its pointless

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:14 pm

Jrue… rumored to be Sacramento’s choice a few days ago and then he falls all the way to No. 17.

Give Kahn a chance. He has made great moves so far, lets see how this shakes out.

I remember years ago when we speaked Felton Spencer because he fit a need, we sucked then and still are not very good, so I like the idea of not picking for need but going with the best value.

Powerslave77 says:

If we take Mullens, I swear this will officially be a McHale draft.

adam W says:

It’s gotta be BJ Mullens or a trade-down right here.

Mike B. says:

GREAT TRADE

Powerslave77 says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:21 pm

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:22 pm

Denver has the rights to Charlotte’s 2010 1st-round draft pick…

So we’re going to have three 1st-rounders next year.

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

Here are the protections to the Charlotte draft pick we just acquired:
>
>
>
Charlotte’s own 2010 1st round pick to Denver (top 12 protected in 2010, top 10 protected in 2011, top 8 protected in 2012, top 3 protected in 2013, and unprotected in the 2014 NBA Draft). [Charlotte-Denver, 6/25/2008]

darren004 says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:23 pm

We had 5 draft picks, we weren’t going to keep them all, trading one for a future Bobcat pick seems very shrewd…

ChrisH says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Thanks Foo. I think it is unlikely we will have that pick next year, can’t picture Charlotte topping 12 next year.

TwinsAreFrauds says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Okay, can we please take Meeks from KY with 28?

Swan Dizzle says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:25 pm

So we traded Lawson for a 1st rounder ?

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Regardless of what year we get that Charlotte pick, this is all you need to know:

We traded the 18th pick in a terribly weak draft for a pick that’s highly-likely to be higher than 18 in a draft that will most-certainly be better than this year’s draft.

There’s Kahn doing what he said he’d do - sell high, buy low, maximize value.

Joe says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

“Traded for a future pick. Sounds like a panic move at the last second…”

It was reported the Wolves had a player in mind at 18 and if he wasn’t there we were trading the pick, and speculation was that it was Daye.

So, you’re completely wrong. And, we obviously weren’t signing 6 draft picks this year so why wouldn’t we trade for future picks at this point (especially because this is a “weak” draft).

Matty says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:26 pm

Yup. Good trade.

KJ says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

Here are the terms and conditions of the pick :The pick would then be protected by a sliding scale, where Charlotte would retain it if it’s in the top 12 in 2010, top 10 in 2011, top eight in 2012 and top three in 2013. Charlotte would have no protection for the pick in 2014

BMac says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

Looking to gain a 1st rounder in next years draft in order to get a big man in a big man deep draft next year. Not a bad move, we aren’t winning a championship next year. Mullens isnt going to contribute for a two years at least this way we hopefully get a big man in next years draft that contributes right away.

Chiaman says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:27 pm

intrigued wolves fan says:

June 25th, 2009 at 8:29 pm

Here is the details on the bobcat pick.

The Nuggets acquired the future pick the day before last June’s draft by sending Charlotte their No. 20 selection. The Bobcats used it to take center Alexis Ajinca.

The pick the Nuggets received remains protected for the top 12 in 2010, the top 10 in 2011, the top eight in 2012 and the top three in 2013. It’s unprotected in 2014, which means conceivably Denver could get the top selection in the draft.

Uh-oh - 2/3 of my EuroStash Targets are off the board. Now that Claver and Casspi are off the board, here’s hoping that Jonas Jarebko is still there. Otherwise, I guess we could go to the next Euro down the list (Beaubois or Nando De Colo?). Otherwise, maybe Wayne Ellington.

Ellington is actually a pretty good fit… at such a low pick, it would be nice to get such a good outside shooter. He had a better 3-point FG% than Curry against much better competition last year.

I’m not saying Ellington is better than Curry at all. But 21 picks later, I think Ellington would be a nice pick-up.

I’m actually okay with dealing Rubio, as long as we get superior value back. That of course excludes the Knicks, who have nothing anyone, even the Wolves, would ever want.

Flynn has a great all-around game, and his athleticism and toughness more than makes up for his height.

Big Daddie says:

Are you picking on my 9 year-old? Ok, we are still thinking…

Mike B. says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:04 pm

I’d be excited to see Rubio play. But it is completely unpredictable how he will play in the NBA. He is a kid. No one likes to pay $50 a game or more to watch the Wolves get spanked night after night. How long is Rubio going to want to stay here if he stinks? Can the Wolves negotiate a buy out clause in Rubio’s contract? To me this is a very impractical pick.

The best outside shooter on this team right now may be Rodney Carney, and he’s unrestricted. You can’t build a team around Big Al without shooters.

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:06 pm

By default, Wayne Ellington would be our starting 2-guard next year. Actually, he could be one of the best steals in the draft if that happened and he started for us next year.

fiveanddime says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:09 pm

I wanted Gibson until we traded for a squad of bigs. Now I want some perimeter shooting. Budinger? I worry he’s too soft. He is a nice switch from Brewer, all offense, little D. Good length and athleticism, though. No foreigners if we are already swapping our 18 and maybe 5 or 6.

Matty says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:09 pm

I like Beaubois a lot as well. It might be a good idea if we can get Rudy Fernandez without over paying.

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:09 pm

Obviously Curry > Ellington. But Ellington shot 5% better from 3-point range last year against much better competition.

He would literally be our starting SG next year… 6th-man at worst. We don’t have anybody at SG. And Flynn is probably our best perimeter shooter right now.

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:11 pm

Wayne Ellington - your starting SG

Wayne Ellington is the best shooter on this team already. Hopefully he’ll be OK on defense.

Forge says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:15 pm

Just need to get Meeks in the 2nd round and keep all those picks. Kahn has done brilliantly

medschoolmatt says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:15 pm

the team is pretty much set at guard now if you think about it. scrappy perimeter defense, great court vision and passing with respectable shooting and slashing to the hole.

now i am hopting etan thomas works out. he is pretty solid when healthy. id still like to see a trade of some sort to get another shooter or big man in here and ship out guys like cardinal, madsen, smith, etc for the right price.

I love Iron Maiden says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

I would love to see a defensive coach come in and make this team a top 15 FG% against squad. Great defense leads to consistent wins, whether you shoot well or not.

alystarre says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:16 pm

and DeColo

Chiaman says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

I can live with W. Ellington at SG for next year, but I’m worried about defense at the 2 & 3 being weak in addition to Big Al and K Love being poor in that regard. Is Kahn going to choose Sam Mitchell to coach and hope that He’ll drill that into the team?

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Intrigued Wolves Fan/Big Daddie/Hoop Daddie - your persistence is winning over a lot of souls on this board.

But Hoop Daddie is still too logical. Looking for something a bit more nonsensical.

C-Note says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:17 pm

Denver needed a back up to Billups besides Carter.

And great pick by my other team, the Lakers, but unfortunately they traded the pick for Cash to be able to sign Ariza and Odom

Chris says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:18 pm

I still think they should have bundled picks/players and traded for the #2 pick and grabbed Thabeet. Then they could have still gotten Rubio at 5.

Foo says:

Cleveland needs to go for it next year. Blair is a rotational player now… he’s the pick for The Cavs.

Peterson says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:19 pm

Yeah I get they needed a guard just think they gave up too much. I like Lawson but i’m guessing we’ll be getting something like a top 12 pick in 2 years for that pick.

C-Note says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:21 pm

I thin Brewer could guard the other teams best 2 or 3 and we could hid Ellington that way, at least is 6′5 and can shoot.

We will be ok now with

Rubio, Flynn, Ellington, Brewer and Gomes playing the 1, 2, and 3 next year. We can get a center next year and hope Brewer develops or draft a SF and C next year

C-Note - great take. You can always switch Ellington to mark the opponent’s weakest perimeter player.

C-Note says:

Rubio not wanting to play here could remind of Steve Francis and they were forced to trade him, I don’t want that to happen to us

The other day in an interview I was watching him and he said he was so excited to play here THIS YEAR, now as someone else posted:

Henry Abbott: Ricky Rubio, not exactly schmoozing the people of the Twin Cities.

Q. Are you excited to go to Minnesota?A. I’m excited to come to the NBA.He was also asked about whether being picked by the ‘Wolves might inspire him to stay in Europe. He said:”I don’t know yet. I have to think about that … I’m going to talk to my agent about that and we’re going to see.”

Interesting that they get him a year later.

He wants to be in Minnesota, got to like that attitude.

Jonny Flynn
Can’t wait to get to Minnesota. Wathc out for us this year. The front office is making a lot of moves to make us a winning team. I’m looking forward to getting out there and helping the team.

Peterson says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:34 pm

Fair enough reverse daddie. what are the restrictions again for the pick?

Brainfreeze says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

I don’t mind the Wolves keeping both point guards this year(assuming Rubio will come here to play of course).

The Wolves may be able to use one of them to move up and take the wing or big man they want next year.

If Rubio will not come here, who do you guys think would be a good trade partner to get a good big man or wing this year?

C-Note says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

If NY could get another team involved then maybe trade Rubio but they have no one we want that is worth Rubio and now they took Hill who would NOT fit with Love and Jefferson

tmtwins says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

So are there any rumors out there about Rubio or Flynn? Last year the wolves drafted Mayo and Chalmers. I saw them make the trade of Chalmers. A few hours later I went to bed and woke up to the Mayo/Love trade. I would rather not wake up and see that Rubio got traded. Anyone have any info?

Forge says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

I like Flynn. Dude has a winning attitude, not afraid to go inside, and is strong as hell. Plays solid D.

C-Note says:

Keep Flynn, trade Rubio

jcoleman37 says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:37 pm

ellington is my favorite pick so far. Like the trade. harden and evans going back to back couldn’t have worked out worse for us. Slowly warming up to the possibilities of Rubio and Flynn though. Wanted one or the other, got both…oh well.

eiddad pooh says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:38 pm

The pick the Nuggets received remains protected for the top 12 in 2010, the top 10 in 2011, the top eight in 2012 and the top three in 2013. It’s unprotected in 2014, which means conceivably Denver could get the top selection in the draft

eiddad pooh says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:39 pm

Flynn won’t go anywhere. I hope they don’t trade Rubio, give him some time to sleep on it and see what happens. Right now he is in NY with everybody yapping in his ear. I find it interesting that neither Rubio nor Flynn mentioned each other during their interviews.

I love Iron Maiden says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:40 pm

I really like having Flynn on the team, I just wish it was under different circumstances. For instance, he’d fit great with Thabeet or Harden/Evans. Flynn has a great attitude, is high character, plays D, and manages a game well.

Peterson says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:41 pm

my head jerked over.

Chiaman says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:41 pm

I’m hard pressed to think of what it would take for the Timberpups to trade a potential Steve Nash away without at least seeing what he can do in the NBA. This of course is negated if he refuses to play in Minnesota.

Peterson says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:42 pm

so we’ll have like the 5th pick in 2013. sweet.

eiddad pooh says:

I still like him.

Brandon says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Remember that there is still free agency. IDK who is out there? Any quality 2s or 3s? God I hope Rubio plays here!!! If not, we better get one helluva trade! I do like that Flynn has that positive attitude, but I pray that he can play? I just am not sold on him like others are. I wish we woulda traded 6+ to go to 3, take Harden, then Rubio at 5. Does anyone recall when I said that I was afraid we were going to do something dumb like we always do?! Im happy about Rubio (if he stays and plays), but not big on Flynn. I do like Ellington as well! Still praying for a trade, like for AK47 or something.

adam W says:

GREAT JOB DAVID. If it wasnt for him moving up we would of never been able to grab Rubio! Flynn is a Leader! I like his attitude already. And like Elllington too. Kahn must be working on a big man to pass up Mullens. Only they know what their doing but I am very happy. Now please retain Carney. BTW i am still in shock we got Rubio!!!! I”M so happy!

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:45 pm

Rubio wants to play in The NBA… he’ll come. And if he doesn’t, then we’ll keep our thumb on him and make him suffer.

bostongopher says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:45 pm

Good choices. If Rubio doesn’t play, they still have his rights to trade whenever he does decide to play. If he gets better with age, maybe wolves can trade for LeBron. probably not. but you get the idea.

Kilrathi says:

June 25th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

We can say whatever we want about the double PG attack, but I have to say that, when I stop and think about it, most of what Kahn’s saying and doing makes sense. And, so, I can’t see him trading Rubio right now, without seeing what he can do. Can it be (I hope it is) that we’re all just gunshy after getting burned time and again after the McHale years? Last year, they even let us go all through the draft before triggering the trade. Let’s hope Kahn’s good sense holds up… Rubio is just a crazy passer, and I’d love to see him play!

C-Note says:

DO NOT bend to Ricky Rubio’s demands. The kid is 18 years old, he can’t be allowed to push around an NBA franchise. He doesn’t want to come to Minnesota? Good, let him stay in Europe.

We’ve got Flynn and Ellington, don’t necessarily NEED him (although, if he comes around and is willing to play here, it’d be SUCH an exciting backcourt experiment to see him and Flynn play together.)

Not much defense from Budinger, but he’s long, stupid athletic and has great shooting range…

That said, there are too many good values still on the board. I say we just stand pat and pick whoever falls to us.

Our two picks are 7 from now and 9 from now… Nine picks away and there are still 8 players on the board who I still like a lot:

1. Jarebko
2. Budinger
3. De Colo
4. Marcus Thornton
5. Danny Green (GREAT D!)
6. Nick Calathes
7. Derrick Brown
8. Patrick Mills

Kahn is a lawyer and a smart guy. By taking Flynn, the Rubio’s have no leverage. “Go ahead and stay in Europe, we have another point guard.”

Then if Rubio blows up in Europe, his value goes sky high. Which is what Kahn has said all long, maximize value.

He has a plan.

joels says:

June 25th, 2009 at 10:02 pm

all you complainers just don’t get it. Finally the wolves have done the smartest thing they could…they drafted the 2 best players available. Right now the team needs talent. We’ll worry about fitting the pieces together later.

Foo says:

My guys are falling off the board: Derrick Brown is gone.

I liked his value and like his game, but he’s basically an undersized, athletic PF, so we didn’t need him anyway.

Seven picks from our last pick… only 6 players I still like:

1. Jarebko - to Detroit

Curry is a worthless defender. Flynn is a warrior. He’s tough, athletic, can shoot and defend.

I will use the analogy used in the movie Major League. When Ricky Vaughn says “I thought you had to do something good to be famous”, and Jake Taylor tells him “not if you do it colorfully” is what I see here. The Wolves if Rubio comes over next year or the year after, may still suck, may lose even more games. But they will at least be entertaining to watch with these two guys while losing. Losing is one thing, but losing colorfully at least people can watch that.

From the Espn insider buzz

Chris Sheridan: Receiving some conflicting info on how hard the New York Knicks did or did not go in their efforts to acquire the No. 5 pick from Minnesota to draft Ricky Rubio.

One source insisted New York discussed sending Wilson Chandler and the No. 8 pick to Minny, while another source said the discussions never went that far. This much is clear: Both Rubio and Jonny Flynn are likely flummoxed by the Wolves taking them back-to-back at 5 and 6, and no one in the Garden expects the Wolves to end up keeping both of them.

Rubio’s comments made him sound fairly disappointed, but don’t expect the same type of prolonged public pouting out of Rubio that Yi Jianlian gave to the Milwaukee Bucks when they drafted him against his wishes two years ago.

Rubio does have a bit of leverage if he wants out of ‘Sota: He can return to Spain for another season and save himself several million dollars by not having to pay his $6 million buyout (Rubio’s Spanish club has reportedly offered to substantially reduce the buyout cost if Rubio returns for one more season), or he could stay in Spain for two more seasons, after which his buyout expires.

One source said the Knicks’ best chance at acquiring Rubio’s rights from Minnesota would be to get him through a sign-and-trade for one of their two restricted free agents, David Lee and Nate Robinson.

2. Budinger
3. De Colo
4. Marcus Thornton - Miami
5. Danny Green (GREAT D!)

Spain’s Rubio girds for cold nights as Minnesota’s pick

By Lewis Krauskopf

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Flashy Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio, selected fifth overall in Thursday’s NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves, said he was thrilled to play in the NBA even though he faces chilly winter nights in the Midwestern state.

“It’s cold there,” Rubio told reporters moments after his name was called at the draft. “Yeah, my mom hates cold places.”

Minnesota is a less cosmopolitan location than other places seen as possible destinations for the dazzling playmaker, such as New York, but Rubio said marketing was not an issue for him.

“I’m not thinking about the marketing right now,” Rubio said. “I’m thinking about to play minutes. That’s my love. I want to play basketball, and if they give me minutes, I’m going to come.”

Asked if he was excited to play for Minnesota, the 18-year-old said: “I’m excited to come to the NBA.”

Rubio, whose trickery and slick ball-handling, as well as his mussed brown hair, have led to comparisons with former American sensation Pete Maravich, was projected by some experts as the second-best prospect in this year’s draft.

But unlike his fellow prospects, Rubio’s draft status may have been complicated by his 4.75 million euro ($6.6 million) buyout he must pay in order to be set free by his current team, Spain’s DKV Joventut.

“Now I know where I’m going to go, so I have to talk with the team, what exactly they want about me, and if necessary, I’m going to pay the buyout,” Rubio said. “We are closer to an agreement with the team, so we are going to see.”

The 6-foot-4 Rubio, who turned professional at age 14, has drawn raves for his slick passing and basketball smarts, though critics question his shooting ability.

Rubio said he was a player “who loves to pass and run and who loves to do defense, too.”

A turning point for Rubio came during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where as a member of the Spanish national team that won silver he drew notice when he held his own in competing in the championship game against U.S. point guard stars Chris Paul, Deron Williams and Jason Kidd.

“It’s helped me a lot because I played against the best players in the NBA, so that means that I can play here,” Rubio said.

“I realized in the Olympic Games that I’m feeling good in the game, so that moment, I realize that I can play here, and that helps me a lot.”

After Rubio’s selection, Minnesota picked another point guard, Jonny Flynn from Syracuse.

“That’s a big surprise for me they took another point guard,” Rubio said. “But we are going to see what they want.

For his part, Flynn said of Rubio: “I can’t wait to go play with him.”

“It’s good to have two facilitators that can make plays on the court,” he added. “I think we can boost each other’s level of play.”

Yep, T. You’ve got a lot more going for you with Henk, Hardware Henk!

eiddad pooh says:

Henk Norel from Espn

Positives:

Long, athletic big man
Excellent motor
Runs the floor well and attacks the glass
Great hustle player
Some good moves around the basket
Solid midrange shooter

Negatives:

Needs to add lots of strength
Gets pushed around in the paint
Limited production for a 21 year old
Struggles as a defender

Summary: Apr 20 Update: While Norel has some things you love about him as a player, he has a long ways to go before he’s a NBA prospect.

He needs to add strength and have a few productive seasons in Europe first. The reports about him being a first-round pick in December look pretty exaggerated right now. However, with a few more years of seasoning, he could be a legit NBA prospect. The team that drafts him will just have to be patient.

Salzy says:

June 25th, 2009 at 10:31 pm

From Chad Ford: Wow! The Timberwolves have selected their fourth point guard of the night. Yes, they sent Ty Lawson to Denver, and Calathes is heading to Greece, but all in all, this is still a surprise. I guess David Kahn likes point guards. Calathes is a real steal here, a terrific passer with a great feel for the game. John Hollinger’s Draft Rater loved him. I think his deal with Greece created some ambiguity and caused his stock to slip.

Jackson says:

June 25th, 2009 at 10:31 pm

WOW!! Dick Vitale was just on ESPN and stated the following: ‘MN has Rubio & Flynn, you can’t win with that backcourt. That combination is going to get a head coach fired!’

Not a bad draft, but I would have loved to get Young and Ellington at the bottom half of the draft. Having Flynn and Rubio is not bad. I think Flynn is going to be a great player. It is true however that both of these players need to be the primary ball handler to be effective though. My guess is Rubio gets pissed and goes back to Spain and Flynn becomes the leader of this team along with Jefferson. Rubio raises his stock and we trade him around draft time next year. It is just hard to stomach your #5 overall draft pick going directly overseas to play. I don’t think anyone drafted that high has ever gone directly overseas. Would have been beautiful to come out of this draft with Rubio or Flynn, Harden, Mullins, Ellington and Young.

Love
Brewer
Jefferson
Harden
Rubio/Flynn

Ellington
Young
Telfair
Gomes/Smith
Mullins

That would be a talented team with a lot of room to grow. At least 3-4 of those guys would have to develop into good players. Then you add a solid veteran or two in the next couple years and they are contenders in the West by the 2011-2012.

10:38 p.m.: As one of the 5,000 point guards Minnesota selected this evening, Jonny Flynn sounds like someone who’ll be sticking around with the Timberwolves: “Going to Minnesota is a great fit for me,” said Flynn. “You’ve got Kevin Love and Al Jefferson, two big men that can make my life easier,” Flynn said. “I get them the ball in situations where they can score and they make me a better player.” As for the snow, Flynn won’t be bothered a bit. He played his college ball at Syracuse and calls Niagara Falls, N.Y. home. — Richard Deitsch SI writer…

Looks like we’ll have to wait with the rest of the league and see if Kahn is bluffing or if he really is going to try to play these two together. I wonder if he just made a lot of coaching candidates lose interest in the job, though.

Mike B. says:

June 25th, 2009 at 10:53 pm

It’s disappointing we could not get Harden or Evans. But Rubio can probably get enough endorsements to pay the buyout (maybe even from T-Wolves sponsors), and play for us next year. It was smart to get another pick for next year so that we have a good package of picks potentially with Jonny Flynn to grab a veteran shooting guard.

Considering Maynor went 20th, I think it’s a waste to pick Flynn that high, but what do I know? We could have picked up the top shooter together (Curry), a good post defender (Hill), or a couple of upside guards (DeRozan or Holiday). I think Flynn could be the most idiotic pick from the Timberwolves since Rashad McCants. It’s not that he is a bad player. It’s just that his comparable value was available at 18. And we already picked Rubio.

Good news is that two weeks into the season, tickets on the street should be going for about 20-35% face value.

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 10:54 pm

Bryan says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:00 pm

I agree JayWolf. But at the same time, I wouldn’t be surprised if we keep them both and see how it goes.

That Wayne Ellington pick was really virtuoso foresight by Kahn. Not only does he mesh perfectly with Rubio’s style, but he gives us a legit shooting guard so we’re not stuck with Rubio and Flynn in the backcourt by default.

Chiaman says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:00 pm

Last thoughts before calling it a night;
Rubio and Flynn in the backcourt, wether platooned with Ellington and Carney or not, really increase athleticism and speed in the open court. This of course requires frontcourt offensive rebounding and defense to play fullcourt BBall. We’re several trades and several drafts away from having that kind of team. Fun to watch until we get there, but it will take time. Great fun to watch this draft and blog with you folks, looking forward to next draft already!

JayWolf says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:01 pm

Khan got his payback on Vitale ripping the picks saying that Stu Scott is working with a great NBA head coach tonight “Well Stu you are working tonight with a great ex NBA coach, and of course I am speaking of Vitale”

Hilarious take that Dickie V.

alphatwolf says:

Skinny says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:05 pm

Oh, CLH! That was good! Jeff Van Gundy sitting on screen all night. Then Vitale trashes the T’Wolves. Perfect. Jackson ask Kahn who he’s looking at for coach and he says a very good one is one of the commentators (or something). I thought he meant Van Gundy because he’s a midget like our draft picks are, but then he worked in Vitale’s name. Very shrewd!(i might have some names wrong but you get the idea)

Those “considerations” from Dallas better be significant… Calathes is good and was 1st-round talent. His contract in Greece pushed him to the 2nd-round, but he’s a 1st-round guy… so I hope we got something significant for him. Maybe there’s a trade in the offing with Dallas.

Jason Kidd is a free-agent after next season and The Mav-Wrecks have nobody else waiting in the wings at PG.

Does anybody see any trades that would make sense with Dallas?

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:17 pm

Alan Hahn from Newsday is still Tweeting like a maniac and now he’s going on WFAN in 12 min…he’s taking this seriously

Bryan says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:19 pm

I actually don’t think Rubio will be traded, after all the effort Kahn went to to try and move up to #2 or #3 to guarantee us taking him. I was sure he was targeting Thabeet, but it’s clear to me now that Rubio was the guy at the top of our board.

So unless he raises an unbearable amount of hell….something that would be very uncharacteristic of a Spanish player, I think he’s in a Wolves’ uniform in the next year or two.

fatassets says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

I’m sure Jerry is busy writing up the stories that are on the sports page now about the draft. I’m guessing making deadline for tomorrow’s paper is a higher priority than filling in the blog.

Salzy says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:21 pm

Actually, as I think about it Rubio staying in Europe a year or two might not be bad - both PGs get to play & develop full-time and we can choose which to keep and which to trade in a couple years - plus we wait to lock-in Rubio to his first contract when he’s closer to prime-time. Would still be a downer for next season though - they will probably be unwatchable once the shine wears off the new faces after a 0-8 start.

Foo says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:22 pm

When asked a week or so ago about having to pay such a hefty buyout for his Italian squad, Rubio said he’s all about getting to his second contract as quickly as possible.

That would seem to suggest that he wants to get that time-table started, so I think he’ll be playing in The NBA this year.

Forge says:

Quit bitching and realize that we took the best on the board picks… We are rebuilding and that Wayne Ellington will be the SOD! Rubio will join us in a year or two, we will have a couple solid picks next year…. Plan is well in motion! Patience my friends… It will take time!

Wayne Ellington is a tremendous pick. He is this year’s Courtney Lee…NBA ready. He can shoot, he can attack the rim, he’s athletic. The prototypical player to pair with a guy like Rubio.

I agree, and looking at ESPN’s polls, so does the nation. Ellington is the sleeper pick of the draft.

Jerry, do you see Flynn being traded in the next day or two. I read elsewhere that a trade of Flynn + 18 to Sac for Evans fell through when the player Sac wanted was no longer there.

If Rubio is our guy and Flynn was BPA, it should not be that hard to package Flynn with some other assets to get a good SG.

Arenal says:

Forge - Regarding Calathes, is anything confirmed regarding our return?

Jerry Zgoda says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:56 pm

Sorry, Arenal, but webhits don’t make either paper any money whatsoever…it’s nice to see the interest, but it’s the main reason newspapers are going out of business because everybody has to come expect to get what we do for free.
Kahn vowed, promised, swore they took Flynn and Rubio to play together, said the NBA rules changes have made it a guard’s league, cited the old-school examples of DJ-Ainge and Dumars-Isiah as examples, didn’t really give a real reason why they didn’t take curry in his short time in the media room other than they really really loved Flynn. (Curry is a point guard too, but a better shooter).
They traded Calathes’ right to Dallas for 2010 second round pick and, of course, cash.
My impression of Kahn so far is he tells the truth as he sees it. I don’t think he’s lying and has a trade up his sleeve. I think, for better or worse, what you see is what you get.

JayWolf says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:57 pm

Foo getting personal, go back to rubbing Jerry’s back and have a “happy ending” to tonight.

mark says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

At first I’ve got to say I was a bit perplexed by taking Flynn but now I’m really warming to it. After all two of our best players are undersized forwards. So it’s like we have the length to compete with somebody like the spurs or the lakers but you through Rubio, Flynn, and Ellington onto the court at the same time, couple that with Love’s passing ability and you can just out run teams. Looks like unless we trade Rubio/Flynn we’re building a kind of old Phoenix Suns team.

Jerry Zgoda says:

June 25th, 2009 at 11:58 pm

It’ll be interesting to see what Ricky’s agent has to say when they come to town tomorrow. I’m assuming Dan Fegan will be with him when Ricky comes for a 3 pm news conference

Salzy says:

Forge says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:01 am

Seriously, JayWolf, “let down?” “LET DOWN?”

Bryan says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:01 am

I’m more interested in what Kahn has to say about Rubio’s buyout. I think Ricky and Dan Fegan have made their stance pretty clear…

I’m glad to know Kahn isn’t planning to deal one of them though. We could do a lot worse than having too many talented point guards. Let’s run with it and see what happens….worse case, they both have high trade value and we can move one to fill a need elsewhere.

JayWolf says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:02 am

Jerry thanks for the info at this point. If you’ve got a few, whats your take on why they didn’t take Curry?

alphatwolf says:

so henk and rubio are buds?

am I the last one to get this?

Jerry Zgoda says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:05 am

Kahn said the buyout situation will be an “interesting ride.” I’ll put this up on a new posting soon but for now this is what he said when asked if he thought the issue was Rubio doesn’t want to play in Minnesota. He said it was a buyout issue.
“I don’t think its a destination problem. I really don’t. I believe he would have been more than happy to play in Oklahoma City, and with all due respect to Oklahoma City, (silence). And I will say this, yes it’s cold here. I told this to Dan Fegan, and I will say this personally to Ricky when I have the opportunity: it’s cold in Detroit, Toronto, Chicago, Milwaukee, and by the way it’s pretty cold in Oklahoma City in the winter. I’ve seen a couple of ice storms in Tulsa. Here’s one difference. We’re in the Western Conference. We get to go to L.A. for four games. We go to Phoenix twice, to Texas and play those teams. We leave. And I told them today, in the off-season, we don’t have any restrictions on where he works on his game in the off-season, provided he works on his game. If he wants to work on his game back in Spain, we’ll send a coach and staff and help him work on his game in Spain. We’d do that for any player by the way, that’s not about Ricky. But we’re in the player development business and we have to be mindful that we live in a different world than the NBA was 15 years ago.

Forge says:

Thanks for the update, Jerry. Seems like the Wolves are making a habit of great 2nd round value PG picks who they end up trading for next year’s 2nd round picks.

I guess you share Reusse’s laments about the internet & newspapers. I don’t know what the business answer is, but the internet isn’t going away and refusing to move into the 21st Century won’t help the newspapers survive any longer. (but thats a topic for a different thread).

Jerry Zgoda says:

I think they didn’t take Curry because they really really love Flynn and had him rated higher. By the way, Curry is considered a point guard, too, right, although a better shooter. I think they think Flynn is more explosive, a better defender and plays bigger than Curry does even though he’s three inches shorter. Kahn said he’s never seen a 6-footer who “looks and feels” like he’s 6-3 or 6-4. I’m skeptical, too, but actually think they might be right because obnoxious Dick Vitale ripped them for not taking Curry.

I love these picks. Love em. Curry at 6 would have made a lot less sense than Flynn. Wake up! Curry is a point guard. He’s a small point guard. He can shoot but who knows if he’ll be able to get his shots off with big, strong NBA guards getting in his face. He’s a playmaking JJ Reddick. Woopty Doo. Flynn is tough. He’s a tough defender and can score in multiple ways. Rubio is the best pick of this draft. We’ll regret it forever if we trade him. He’s 18 and 6′5″. He’s going to grow. He’ll put on weight and develop a consistent jump shot. He’s got long arms and good instincts on defense. Neither of them are great shooters, but they can serviceable. Kahn drafted the two best players on their board and I think it was the right move. Love the Ellingson pick too.

Bill Simmons had the quote of night…

sportsguy33 DaJuan Blair to the Spurs at 37? How does sh#t like this happen? You’re damned right I just swore. Unbelievable.

Foo says:

JayWolf - good. I’m glad you’re recovering.

Stick around some… Now that the draft night is over, I look forward to seeing if you’re still around in a week or two.

Bryan says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:17 am

Well, we did take a very good shooter in Ellington, who actually has the size to be a legit shooting guard. So that helps. And I’m sure Kahn is well aware of the types of players a guy like Rubio needs to thrive, so I’d expect a busy summer of getting shooters and athletes in for workouts.

Guys like Carney and Brewer already look so much more dangerous on offense with Rubio to drop them dimes cutting to the basket. Think of what Jason Kidd can do with the players around him. I really believe Rubio will be able to do the same thing in two or three years.

Jerry Zgoda says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:17 am

Also, I am adjusting to all this “new media.” Just started tweeting yesterday and I tweeted during the draft when, in retrospect, i should have blogged some entries. Bigger audience. Lesson learned.

Salzy says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:19 am

Souhan made an interesting observation I hadn’t stopped to consider yet - seems like Jefferson’s and Rubio’s games aren’t very complimentary. Rubio is looking to move the ball - Jefferson is a dump & post player. Seems like Love is a better match for style - I wonder if the ultimate decision over the next couple of years will be to pick the stronger tandem of Love/Rubio or Flynn/Jefferson?

Or - as my brother commented, maybe they are taking a hockey mentality and trying to put together two strong lines. :-)

Wolves trade Calathes to Dallas
Posted 59m ago | Comment | Recommend E-mail | Save | Print | Subscribe to stories like this
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Timberwolves have traded second-round pick Nick Calathes to the Dallas Mavericks for a 2010 second-round pick and cash considerations.

The Wolves selected the Florida guard with the 45th overall pick. But with first-rounders Ricky Rubio, Jonny Flynn and Wayne Ellington already coming to a jam-packed roster, the Wolves really didn’t have room for Calathes this season.

Calathes has already signed a contract to play professionally in Greece.

Man, Love was going NUTS on Twitter in the first round.

He’s gotta be careful about some of the things he says. It looks real bad when you second-guess your boss so publicly.

Jerry Zgoda says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:24 am

I do think Kahn is looking at this very big picture. He seems to be quite the expansive thinker and he’s looking at this as one crucial moment in many, many to come the next three years. I think he took the best players that were there and made moves with Lawson and Calathes that were aimed for the future. If James Johnson had been there, I think, he would have used that 18th pick. When he was gone, they took the Charlotte pick. Like it or hate it, I think he’s prepared for this team to be lousy, maybe wants it, next year so they can get one more chance at a high lottery pick and supplement it now with the Utah and Charlotte picks.

JayWolf says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:24 am

Rodman says:

As the dust settles… what a great draft. We got players. All three first rounders can play.

None of this “looks good on paper” stuff. None of this “hasn’t delivered in big games” stuff. These guys can play.

I love that we didn’t over pursue the 2nd pick. Mike Miller and Foye for Rubio????

That has to be the greatest Wolves trade by far.

Jerry Zgoda says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:27 am

I did post the Calathes trade at 11:56 — and tweeted it earlier — after i finished up newspaper deadlines…

Bryan says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:27 am

Hopefully Jerome Jordan is a target in next year’s draft. If we’re not trading for Thabeet and none of the veteran centers seem viable, that’s the best option.

I would like to have kept Calathes though. We could have still stashed him in Europe and he’s one of those do-it-all players that’s so crucial in the modern NBA. Can play the 1, 2, or 3 and can shoot. That’s a valuable asset, to have a guy who can come in and fill needs on a game-by-game basis.

alphatwolf says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:29 am

Ha, ha. Here’a a good one.

What do you think about the Minnesota trade now?

I think you already know the answer to that question.
Dumb. Impatient. Short-sighted.

At best, Miller and Foye will be the team’s 4th and 5th best players, more likely the 5th and 6th best players. In time, Rubio could have been the 2nd or 3rd best player on the team.

JayWolf says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:29 am

Jerry whats your bottom line feeling on Rubio, here, Europe or another team?

Bryan says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:30 am

I’m not saying I’m holding out for a Thabeet trade. I’m saying that Love was inappropriate with his Tweets tonight, just like he was when he broke McHale’s firing before Kahn made it official. That’s not right, and apparently Love isn’t picking that up.

Hell, even Jefferson called him out about the McHale thing.

alphatwolf says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:31 am

Very early on the Calathes tweet–appreciated. Didn’t see that anywhere for a long time. Started to wonder if it was real.

JJ says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:32 am

Guys-

All of these recent players drafted and mixing them with the current roster won’t mean squat in thre months….Kahn has said it more than once (and so have the so called experts): The Wolves have many more moves up their sleeves!!!! They have a number of chips to choose from, along with flexibility…..

Arenal says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:33 am

LMAO, Kahn told Love to TWEET MORE!!!! He said he didnt mind him doing it at all. He said times change and what Love did is signs of the times. Hell today on Dan Patrick Kahn said it again! To a NATIONAL AUDIENCE. And he said that Love has the potential to be great! Your bias towards Love is getting old Bryan. Seriously get a grip. Are you really that sensitive Bryan? Or do you just like finding stuff to nitpick?

JayWolf says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:33 am

Drunken Mule says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:35 am

I must admit, i thought you were lacking on your blog coverage, but I understand you have more pressing deadlines that your blog here. I applaud what you do and keep it. My only suggestion is to update the blog, mainly in comments like you have done after we made our 2nd rd picks every so often, even if it is far between the updates/posts. It lets us know you are still paying attention to us, even if your post is “working on info on trading a pick, etc. Keep up the great work. Go Wolves!

JJ says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:36 am

To start, they have two to three possible first round picks next year (Utah, Charlotte, and their own). They have the rights to players this year: Flynn, Rubio, and Ellington (Ellington was an awesome take–the guy is a flat out winner and perfect fit for this team). They also have some expiring contracts: Madsen, Smith, Thomas, and Pechrov. I expect those expiring deals to become very important to teams this year for two reasons: Clearing cap room for next year’s bonanza of star free agents (many teams are already trying to position themselves by cleaning up their cap) and the economy for those smaller market, less drawing teams.

Bryan says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:37 am

Josh Meyer says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:38 am

Jerry, is there still a chance Kahn sends Flynn and a future pick to the Kings for Evans?

Sam says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:38 am

Just watched the Kahn press conference.

I’ll admit it… I’m starting to really love this Wolves draft. I like what Kahn said about not falling into the trap of needing a formulaic “point” and “shooting” guard. The fact is, the Wolves drafted two dynamic, exciting, TALENTED guards. One is a great passer, the other is a great penetrator. I don’t see why, because they’ve both been labeled “point” guards by the media, they can’t play on the court at the same time.

Maybe they can’t. Maybe they are too small together. But just because they technically play the same position doesn’t mean they won’t play well together.

Arenal says:

I predict Thabeet will be injured one month into the season. I am sure Bryan will be crying like he lost his puppy.

JJ says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:45 am

My gut strongly tells me that Kahn will keep Love, Jefferson, Telfair (back-up), Flynn, Ellington, Gomes, and Brewer (he has to keep Brewer because of his injuries). He will also resign Carney. That makes eight. Everyone else is on the table and along with picks or expiring contracts, could net a decent player or two that could create a 35-40 win team in 2009-10. Personally, I think Kahn is trying to snow other GMs with his “intentions on keeping Rubio”). I’m guessing he waits a few weeks, then pulls the trigger at the highest point to nab a proven NBA SG, or SF. I could see the Knicks, Clippers, or Bulls push hard for Rubio.

Arenal says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:46 am

It says you are obsessed with cutting down Love every chance you get. Did I not make that abundantly clear when I boxed you with all that Kahn being appreciative of Love’s twittering? Not to mention he is a foundational piece to this team so get used to having him around. Actually I am glad you don’t want him here, I like watching you squirm when he puts up double doubles and you come up with lame excuses as to why he doesnt fit on this team. Good entertainment. Oh yeah Thabeet = Bust. Good night!

Rodman says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:57 am

Let’s be real clear here folks….

The Wolves will not trade Ricky Rubio before the season starts. That’s just stupid. They will find out what they’ve got. You just don’t trade a guy like that. What would a proven player do right now? We competing with the Lakers.

Kahn just pulled off potentially one of the best trades ever. You don’t flip a player like that.

Twinstalker says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:57 am

Here’s what I think:

1. Kahn liked Flynn as much as Curry.

2. When he picked Rubio, he couldn’t be totally sure Rubio would be a TWolf this season.

3. He thinks Flynn and Rubio can play together.

4. He takes the true point guard at 6 just in case something goes wrong in the Rubio situation.

I think he’s right about them being able to play together. Plus, if you distribute the minutes right, they’ll only need to be together for 15 minutes per game. Though this would mean Telfair is gone.

Forge says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:58 am

Jay what are you implying? Nevermind dont go there. :)

Rodman says:

June 26th, 2009 at 12:58 am

And for the record, Love’s tweets are totally lame and stupid.

It’s like some kid jacked up on Red Bull. You don’t diss other players like that. It’s unprofessional.

I know he’s just messing around and getting goofy, but come on.

Bryan says:

Rodman which player did he diss? Seriously tell me. Because right now you are as just as big an idiot as Bryan.

Bryan says:

June 26th, 2009 at 1:01 am

If it’s between Flynn and Telfair, it’s Flynn by a mile. Which I do kind of feel bad about, because I like Bassy, but Flynn is just better. Shoots better, finishes better, defends better….at his size and abilities, he’s actually what everyone thought Telfair would be coming out of high school.

Twinstalker says:

June 26th, 2009 at 1:02 am

Brewer, Ellington, Flynn, and Rubio, whichever three of those, running the floor after a Love outlet. When they can’t run, they wait for Big Al and dump it inside. It will be interesting and maybe fun.

Next year you add a top big man (who is bound to be much better than Thabeet), and you’ve got the makings of a team.

I don’t think the Wolves are far out either. 16 months…that’s the timetable Kahn keeps quoting. So he wants us to be playoff competitive by the start of the 2010 season. That’s basically just one year…not long at all in the big picture of things.

Arenal says:

June 26th, 2009 at 1:11 am

korea says:

June 26th, 2009 at 1:14 am

Tomxx says:

When the Twolves took Rubio at 5, it was hard to figure out whom they would take next. Everyone complains about them taking Flynn (who probably was the best player on the board at that time) but few (other than those who would prefer Curry) have said whom they should have taken instead. Flynn in my opinion was the best player on the board.

Meanwhile, there are things to work out regarding Rubio’s contract status etc. There are probably a few trade scenarios being considered as well.

Bryan says:

The 6ft-4in guard, who turned professional at age 14, said his priority was game-time rather than marketing ahead of joining the Timberwolves, whose home base lacks the profile of more cosmopolitan destinations.
“I’m thinking about to play minutes,” Rubio said.
“That’s my love. I want to play basketball, and if they give me minutes, I’m going to come.”

JJ says:

June 26th, 2009 at 2:39 am

Guys-

Wolves have 58.12M locked into player salaries for 2009-10 (the cap is 57M and the luxury tax is 70M).

This includes 46.24M in current players who will see the floor (including rookie contracts for Rubio-3.27M, Flynn-2.97M, and Ellington-1.00M) and 11.88M in expiring dead weight (Brown, Madsen, Cardinal, and Pecherov).

In 2010-11 they have 28.27M on the books (not including the team option for Love) and three potential draft picks (Their own, Utah, and Charlotte).

It is very feasible for Kahn to go out and grab a decent mid-level SG for those expiring contracts toward the trade deadline in 2010 (for say 8-11M). Add in the 28.27 already on the books and the Wolves will be sitting at roughly 38M against next years cap (which will most likely be the same 58M (the Luxury tax will be slightly below 70M).

They can then concentrate on some mid level free agents as they see fight….all in all, we spend this coming season improving and then next season the realistic goal is making the playoffs and contending.

God damn I’m happy with how today went. :)

Also, I saw a picture of Rubio on NBA.com in a Wolves cap and holding a game ball, and…

Is he really going to wear #89…?

JJ-

Absolutely, that was what I was thinking too.

Anyone down for a Rubio/Joe Johnson backcourt? :)

I hope so Bryan. I love weird numbers.

Bryan-

When I noted getting a SG—that is exactly the type of guy I was thinking about!!!

JJ says:

PG Rubio/Flynn
SG Johnson/Ellington
SF Gomes/Brewer
PF Love/
C Jefferson

Rest of it: draft next year….solid 10 deep!

Only issue I have with that JJ is that Gomes isn’t really a 3. He’s an undersized 4.

i don’t see Joe Johnso leaving Atlanta. it would be interesting, but he also loves to bring the ball up the court. and last i checked Stern still only allows one ball on the court during a game.

No recap from Jerry tonight?

Ok. I’ll recap for us!

#5 Ricky Rubio: best pick we could have made. Whether he plays this year, next year, or for a different team, we’re guaranteed to get something good out of it. If he does play for us, and I think he will, then we’ve got our point guard of the future and a kid with all the potential to be an all time great.

#6 Jonny Flynn: odd to pick another point guard here, but the reality is it was all point guards or Jordan Hill. So we took the best one available…like you all say every team should do. So don’t complain. Flynn is athletic, aggressive, and a great defender. I’m not sure this Rubio/Flynn duo thing will work out…in fact I’m pretty sure it won’t…but it is what it is. Flynn is great insurance if Rubio balks and wants out, and individually he’s a great talent.

#18 traded to the Nuggets: we got a first round pick in the 2010 draft for this. That’s a lot more significant that it seems right now.

#28 Wayne Ellington: this was really virtuoso foresight on Kahn’s part. First of all, Ellington is NBA ready. Very much like Courtney Lee in that regard. Second, his skillset meshes perfectly with Rubio’s. He can get to the rim and finish those tricky passes and catch ally opps, and he can hit the deep ball when Rubio penetrates and kicks out. We need 2 or 3 more guys like Ellington on the roster.

#45 traded to Dallas: kind of wish we had kept Calathes. I’m not sure what we gain by this, unless Kahn is convinced there will be a better second rounder in 2010. But Calathes is such a skilled player, can play the 1, 2, and 3, and can shoot. We’ll have to see on this one.

#47 Henk Norel: Stuart Scott didn’t realize we had 6 picks, not 5. LOL. This strikes me as mostly catering to Rubio, but Norel can help us a lot all on his own. He’s a face up 4 with a decent shot, something we’ve been badly needing, plus he’s high energy and can run the floor, which is something Rubio needs. So I bet not many people have heard of him, but he is a pretty good pick that would actually be worthwhile to try and bring in.

great job bryan.

i think the wolves had a good night, i still think they’er in a position where they can make a couple moves in free agency and add another guard, make a trade and possibly add to the front court. with the expiring contracts left and the cap space the wolves have I like the chances of this team getting a couple more pieces to work with and now w/ Flynn and Rubio even use Telfair to move some bodies around

and Bryan, i believe the #89 on the basketball referred to the year the TWolves joined the NBA.

Are there any centers out there who can rebound and defend the rim who we can pick up for this coming season? Also, how’s the crop of #5’s look for next year’s draft?

Rubio and Flynn might finally break the Wolves curse in regards to point guards. They have been cursed from the beginning when they took “Pooh” instead of Tim Hardaway.
