A good league source tells me new Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis has chosen two notable names to supplement top assistant coach Dave Wohl on his staff:
Bill Laimbeer and Reggie Theus.
That’s a staff certainly with some name recognition now.
Laimbeer unexpectedly quit his job as the Detroit Shock’s head coach and general manager in June after winning three WNBA titles in seven seasons as the franchise’s coach, presumably to pursue NBA coaching opportunities. He has never coached in the NBA.
He is believed to be one of the 14 candidates Kahn interviewed for the head coaching job accepted by Rambis earlier this month.
Theus, the former New Mexico State coach who also was an assistant under Rick Pitino at Louisville, was fired by Sacramento last winter 24 games into his second season as the Kings head coach.
David Kahn didn’t answer a text message tonight asking him to confirm the hires.
He is back in Spain this weekend trying one more time to finalize a buyout deal with DKV Joventut that would get Ricky Rubio in a Wolves uniform by training camp. If completed, the deal would include the Wolves playing an exhibition game against Joventut in Badalona, Spain, next October.
There’s a good chance J.B. Bickerstaff will remain on the bench, and he could be the young coach Kahn said he wants to be available “24/7″ to work with players in the gym day or night whenever they so choose.
Expect Jerry Sichting and Dean Cooper to be reassigned to the front office until their contracts expire.
