Wolves will bring Jefferson, Brewer back slowly in preseason play

The Wolves plan to limit Al Jefferson and Corey Brewer to only the first half today at 5 against Milwaukee in Mankato in an effort to bring them back in a measured way from off-season knee surgeries.
Kurt Rambis consulted with trainer Greg Farnam at today’s shootaround at Bresnan Arena and Rambis said he will follow Farnam’s advice and limit both players’ minutes as they each return from torn anterior-cruciate knee ligaments last winter.
Jefferson, Brewer, Jonny Flynn, Ryan Gomes and Kevin Love all wore white jerseys at this morning’s shootaround, suggesting they will be the starting lineup tonight against the Bucks.
That was the lineup Rambis put together for the first scrimmage on Tuesday night.
I asked him this morning how much he thinks Brewer can play at 2 guard position this season. That’s where he’s at in this lineup configuration.
“That’s what we’re going to find out,” Rambis said. “That’s what preseason and training camp are all about, finding what players can and can’t do and how it fits in with everybody else. It’s about how he fits in, how the unit plays together, if their strengths and weaknessses are compatible with each other out on the floor.
“We expect them all to be able to handle the ball to a certain extent. We expect them all to be able to shoot the basketball and make plays and pass the ball. It’s a combination of all those things.”
Flynn today will face Brandon Jennings, the point guard he faced often in pre-draft workouts last summer. The Wolves took Flynn sixth overall, the Bucks selected Jennings 10th with a pick that partly contributed to them deciding not to match the offer sheet the Wolves made to Ramon Sessions last month.
“I went to basically every workout with him, so we got to be pretty close,” Flynn said. “It had to be eight or nine. It seemed like everywhere. I couldn’t shake him. Everywhere I was at, he was there. We definitely got close after that and stayed in contact.”
They texted and talked by phone Saturday night and Flynn said at today’s shootaround that he might seek Jennings out for lunch before today’s game.
UPDATE: Bucks coach Scott Skiles said he will limit his two players coming back from season-ending injuries as year ago as well: Michael Redd probably will only play the first half and Andrew Bogut likely will play the first 8 to 10 minutes and then sit for the night.
For the Wolves, Oleksiy Pecherov (broken wrist) and Devin Green (hamstring) won’t play.
